An Unexciting Chances Thread!

<p>I posted a similar chances in the regular chances section but I didn't get any input on there about my chances at RPI, so....here goes nothing......</p>

<p>white female from New York
just finished my junior year
public high school </p>

<p>weighted GPA is about( i don't get to know exact until next year, so this is not necessarily exact) a 3.96
-don't know class rank until next year, but definitely top 10% of class, maybe top 5% but I don't know</p>

<p>Intended major: physics, engineering, or math</p>

<p>SAT: 2080 (first try)
580 CR ,770 Math,730 Writing
def. will retake, CR will probably be in 600's on second try</p>

<p>SAT II's:
Math II- 750
Physics- 630 (retake next year- took it this year w/o AP course so I didn't have all the knowledge)</p>

<p>have been taking all honors/AP courses...got A's in every class</p>

<p>AP's Classes:</p>

<p>sophomore:
AP World History (4)</p>

<p>junior:
AP Studio Art: Drawing
AP English Language
AP US History</p>

<p>senior:
AP English Literature
AP Government
AP Italian
AP Calculus AB
AP Chemistry
AP Biology
AP Physics (self study)</p>

<p>EC's:
Mathletes (9-12), co-president this year and next year
Art Club (9-12) treasurer this year
Chess Club (11-12), probably vice-president next year
Science Olympiads (11-12)
Talented and Gifted Program at school</p>

<p>Awards:
RPI Medalist
American Math Competition 12 School High Scorer
School high scorer in Senior High Mathletes
1st place in New York State in Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State poster contest (not the most important achievement)
2nd place in school pi memorizing competition (again...nothing major)
perfect attendance grades 10-11....I don't think that counts for anything!</p>

<p>Volunteer:
Office assistant at church for religion classes every Sunday (9-12)
Volunteer at Vacation Bible School at church (9-12)</p>

<p>I tutored someone in math and physics this year...but I got paid...so I don't know if I should put that down</p>

<p>I gotta work on my EC's....</p>

<p>If you've taken a lot of AP/Honors classes and gotten all As, your weighted GPA will be higher than a 3.96, won't it?</p>

<p>well..all honors/ap's except for required classes like health and art...so my gpa with just the main subjects is a bit higher...</p>

<p>and I'm not exactly sure how my school counts half year courses and they refuse to tell us gpa and class rank until senior year!!!! :(</p>

<p>Right, but an A in a non-honors class is a 4.0. In my DD's HS, the grade in an honors class essentially gets an extra point. So an A in an honors class is a 5.0. For an AP class, an A is worth more than a 5.0. </p>

<p>So if you've got all As in your academic classes, and they're all honors or AP, then your weighted average would be closer to a 5.0 than a 4.0, even if you got Cs in gym or whatever. </p>

<p>Maybe your unweighted average is a 3.96, but your weighted average would have to be higher.</p>

<p>But if it's weighed, it's weighted, so an A in an honors course would still be higher than a 4.0.</p>

<p>My school does it on a 100 point scale so the way my friend's school does it is your weighted average out of 100 then divide by 100 and multiply by 4...so... I've seen many different ways of calculating it.</p>

<p>Ok, so out of 100 my weighted GPA's between 99 and 100 according to my school's way. That's just by multiplying each Honors course by 1.05 and each AP by 1.08.</p>

<p>You should be good to go if you can get your SAT CR score in the 600-700 range. I would recommend taking BC Calculus instead of AB Calculus, if it is offered at your school. AB Calculus cover the material in college Calculus I spread out over a year; BC Calculus cover the material in college Calculus I and Calculus II.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, Calc AB is the highest level of math at my school.</p>

My son had the same situation at his high school. He ended up taking Calculus I and Calculus II at a local community college in the evenings. RPI gave my son credit for both Calculus I and Calculus II. He also received credit for Physics I and Physics II that he also took in the evening at another community college. The only validation that is outstanding is Dual Enrollment English Composition; hopefully that will count towards the writing courses offered at RPI.</p>
