Hello I am a high school Senior student who got acceptance to Berkeley, Letters and Science.

I will major in computer science.

As an international student, I am unable to write AWPE (Analytical Writing Placement Examination) in California.

Is there any way to write the exam after arriving at Berkeley?

Yes, it will be given on campus at the start of each semester for incoming students who were not able to take the AWPE in May.

The test in May is for California high school students. Out of state, including international, take the exam at the beginning of their first semester, unless they have achieved a score on one of the standard exams that satisfies the entry level writing course requirement.

Here is a section of the FAQ from the registrar’s office:

"As an incoming freshman, how do I know which R&C courses I am required to take?
If you are a California high school student and have not met the requirement via SAT or ACT scores, or AP exam results, you are urged to take the Analytical Writing Placement Examination (AWPE) in the spring of your senior year in high school.

If you are an international or out-of-state student, and have not already passed out of the requirement, the AWP exam is administered on campus twice a year to meet your needs. You should take this exam during your first semester at Berkeley. The exam schedule is posted on the College Writing Programs website." - [Reading & Composition FAQs - Office Of The Registrar](http://registrar.berkeley.edu/RCFAQ.html)

Here is a reference to the course, although it is not yet updated, still having the Spring semester date. [CWP - Advanced Writing Placement Exam](http://writing.berkeley.edu/newsite/awpexam.htm)

I really appreciate you help!
I never could find that information with Google :(

I would like to add one more sub-question.

How difficult Analytical Writing Placement Examination? (If there is any material, please inform me)

Is it really hard to pass? My SAT writing score was only 600 and I am really nervous.

Also, if I fail the two tests given at the first year, do I get another chance next year? Or am I forced to take writing classes in Cal.

Thank you again!

Passing the AWPE is about equivalent to getting a 680 on the writing part of the SAT, or passing an AP English test with a 3 or higher. Might be a little bit easier, but the same approximate level of english composition is required to pass.

You won’t take two tests - they do not allow retaking the AWPE - because it is only a measurement to determine which writing class you will take. It is not a ‘fail’ in the usual sense. Better to think of your results when you take the AWPE as either “qualified to waive the entry writing class” or “didn’t qualify for a waiver”. If someone scored a 670 on the writing part of the SAT, they did not “fail” the SAT writing.

Everyone has to take three writing classes, they are called Entry level Writing, and two two Reading and Composition courses (R&C A and R&C B) and unless you have high enough SAT, ACT, AP etc scores, you will take 1, 2 or all three.

Turns out that Cal makes it pretty painless if you don’t qualify to skip Entry Level Writing by a high enough score on AWPE. They have a combined class that is both Entry Level Writing and R&C A in one semester.

That means the only impact of not qualifying on the AWPE is that the writing class you will take is a bit more work than if you do qualify by passing AWPE. If you get a high enough score on AWPE, you would take R&C A and R&C B classes sometime in your first two years. If you don’t get high enough on AWPE, you would take the combined course (College Writing) and R&C B sometime in your first two years. Either way, you take two classes in writing.

Great details!
Thank you!!!
Your respond answers all my questions :D

Do we have to submit our ap scores at a certain time, so that we dont have to take the placement test?

@lakers4lyfe
Why? Just take it. You can choose to fail it.
Your AP score will get rid of it anyways.

If the UC system has not processed a qualifying score from SAT, ACT, IB or AP tests by April 1, and you attend a California based high school, they will schedule you for the AWPE in May. They can be a bit slow in processing updates, don’t wait until the last minute to submit scores.

im still confused, so this test is just a placement for writing? or do they compare my personal statement and not think it was qualified, so they are making me do another one? clarification?

thanks

I am taking the AWPE as well and I was wondering if you knew what we have to bring to the exam?
