Would you recommend pre-meds to take Anatomy & Physiology?

If you're a biochem major (like I), then Anatomy & Physiology does not work towards your degree. I really want to take A&P regardless, for personal insight & for good prep. In such case (where the course would not work towards your degree), would you recommend to just take the lecture class and skip the lab?

If it fits into your schedule, go for it. Its not going to help you (or hurt you for that matter) admissions-wise. Nor will it help for the MCAT. But you said that you’re really interested in it and thats a great reason to take a course that doesn’t work towards your degree.

On the other hand, if its going to be tough to work into your schedule, consider that you’ll get all the anatomy and physiology you can handle in med school, so if you can’t take it in UG, no worries.

Thanks. Another thing I was thinking was that it would help me a lot when shadowing physicians and I would be able to understand things more and conversate more & more knowledgeably?

Anatomy might help somewhat in surgery (the prob is that there’s a significant difference in surgical and straight anatomical lingo), but otherwise I wouldn’t expect it to be super useful. Physiology would also depend on the depth and focus. Knowing the pancreatic enzymes probably won’t help, nor would just learning all of the hormones. Now if the class has a medicinal focus that integrates everything and helps you understand the consequences behind this or that…that may help. Honestly though, it really isn’t worth taking a class out of hopes that you are going to get more out of your shadowing. You would be better off finding a list of common medical terms and memorizing them.

It depends on your list of Med. Schools. One on D’s list added requiremnt of Anatomy in UG. D. had to drop one of her minors to accomodate this class in her senior schedule.
