And so it begins...help from vets of the process please!

The first one is UNC.

Jym, this one doesn’t need any educational assistance. He will need a shrink/psych to help the transition socially, but I have faith that he’ll be fine. #2 son…I’ll jump off that bridge when I come to it!

Not educational - social supports. As you well know, college is a difficult transition for any student, and can be especially for those with social challenges. Some schools have mores resources than others to help with this.

That is something I should probably shift my efforts to now that the hunting and gathering job is done. Thanks Jym.

Now folks, I just got promoted to “Senior” member a week after my 49th birthday…yikes!

^Just wait - the AARP membership solicitations will be on their way.

Update 2/2/2016

So thanks to everyone’s input and help, his apps are all in and the waiting begins! After all the Duke drama, he was rejected. He got over it in a day or so. (But now Duke has dropped out of the top 25 for the first time in years…coincidence? Or did mama bear hex them?

-Duke ED: Rejected
-Michigan EA: Accepted OOS
-Tulane EA: Accepted (H and 32k)
-Miami U EA: Accepted (H and $22)
-Binghamton EA: Accepted In State
-Northeastern EA: Accepted (H and $22)
-UVa EA: Deferred OOS
-UNC EA: Deferred OOS
-Cornell RD:
-Northwestern RD:
-Wake Forest RD:

He probably could have cut down on EAs, but ppl kept saying he could get rejected at any or all even with good stats. After he got accepted at Mchigan, he dropped a number of schools from his CA for RD. We’ll see what happens next with RD, but we are going to Ann Arbor next weekend for Campus Days.

Congratulations to your son, he’s doing very well! I’m glad the Duke blip didn’t bother him much. Good luck to him on the remaining decisions!

Enjoy your visit to Ann Arbor - stop by Zingerman’s Deli!

Update: rejected by Northwestern. (Along with a few dozen of his classmates!). Just a few more days and this will all be over!

Ah, but then the cogitating about which one is the “right” choice.

Congrats to him! He’s already got lots of good choices!

Congrats!

Good job, Mom. Congrats to you both.

I love these follow-up threads. Thanks @HRSMom, and kudos for hexing Duke. I won’t be crossing you!

Congrats,
Very happy to see the acceptance to Miami U - my D. is a graduate, Honors. She is still very fond of her college, that opened doors to her future.

Business will likely involve an MBA, so undergrad just needs to be a good fit for him to flourish. Kids who are 17 & 18 don’t usually know what career they’ll commit to. Are there 3 majors listed that interest him? Aspergers may mean that the living situation is very important to him. Visit dorms. Can he visit overnight? What do students do on weekends? Do the food options meet his needs? Does he need/want a single room? The room & board situation may make or break his experience more than other criteria.

I haven’t met your son, and he may do fine with transitions. Making the transition to college is a large change for every student, but typically students with Aspergers have more/different challenges. This reading list is great, just for getting an idea - one of the books documents the first year of college from a students’ perspective: http://www.rit.edu/~w-ssp/parents.php

I would definitely consider looking at colleges where there is Aspie support. I know that RIT, for example, has a comprehensive Aspie support program. Students who register with the program gain additional support, can request have have guaranteed single dorm rooms (which can be a huge benefit for Aspies) as well as a weekly support program, if desired.

The following link lists colleges with Aspie support.

Your son sounds very smart and works hard, which is fantastic. But you also say that his social skills are challenging for him. A support program may be very helpful for him to reach his goals.

Last, has he thought about majoring in Data Analytics? That is the up and coming career having to do with visualizing and interpreting numbers/patterns of numbers - very high growth and $ in this career, and my guess is that it would be a good fit for your son. I’ll bet he enjoys patterns, and that coupled with his mathematics interest would be a great fit for that career.

@MazeArtCrew interesting…data analytics. Will see what he thinks! Might be a good fit.

Update:
UVa WL
Wake Forest Accepted

Excellent!

Congratulations!

Last one batch:

Cornell WL
UNC WL

3 WL right at the end, so he is a little deflated, but I think it is just anticlimactic is all.
