And so it begins...help from vets of the process please!

Hate the wait list thing, @HRSMom! So frustrating. You don’t know if it’s just a nice door prize or they really are trying to protect their yield by making you promise to attend before they take you off it

Aside from the wait lists, how do his choices stack up now?

I think he is thinking if he gets off the Cornell WL, he’ll accept. Otherwise I think he’ll go to Michigan. (He still talks about Wake, but I’m not sure he is fully considering. He never visited, so we’d have to fly down, and we have some medical stuff making that impossible till mid April.)

Folks, is there any real value in waiting to deposit until month end? If S is going to UMich unless he gets off the Cornell WL, which is unlikely, then what am I waiting for? I presume Cornell would not go to the WL before May 1 anyway right? I think S has some agita about not depositing yet. I think it would make him feel more settled, even if there was a 5% chance he would change.

I’d go ahead and deposit.

@hrsmom Earlier is better for housing choices. Unless he likes the idea of bus rides and north campus.

There is no benefit to waiting.

He’s not obligated to do anything until May 1, so if he doesn’t feel ready I don’t think he should be made to do that. But if he’s chomping at the bit, then don’t hold him up. Let him commit and start to think of the great things ahead at the school that wants him. Not depositing, I think, might make him feel like you aren’t fully supporting his choice and that you’re the one clinging to the hope of Cornell.

Ok then! Depositing tonight (I think I should let him be the one to do it!)

Go Blue! (And this from a native Buckeye;)

Yea! Yes, he should do it. He should be driving the bus on all this from here on out (though my boys still had to be prodded to do dorm shopping)!

Assuming he’s in LS&A… He might want to apply to the honors program. It’s a cool program, but much more importantly, you get guaranteed spot in South Quad.

@notveryzen, Isn’t it too late to apply to the honors program at Michigan for incoming fall 2016 freshmen?

@HRSMom Congrats! I have a freshman at MIchigan. She had applied to Cornell ED, got deferred, then offered the guaranteed transfer, which she is not taking. She had a fabulous first year at Michigan.

I lived in South Quad, and they show my old room on the tour sometimes. It has not changed a bit. There is little to recommend South Quad except location. :). But I guess that is something.

Since the room we saw was “underwhelming”, it could have been yours!

Honors is still open but applications are on a space available basis at this point. It’s not a hard app, just one 500 word essay.

You guys must have had a different tour than me. I lived in south quad back in the late '80s and it is much much nicer now. The common areas in particular are great. I also was blessed to live in a “converted triple”, meaning a room built for 1 but had 3 jammed in due to over-enrollment. But I never once had to ride a bus to class!

Maybe they have improved the common areas, but my best friend from college said they showed my room on the tour she took with her son two years ago, and it looked the same (not meant as a compliment) as it did in 1980-81. South Quad was a zoo then – as mostly freshman dorms are at all large universities, I am sure.

They just finished a $60 million renovation last summer. Your friends may have seen it before it was updated. It’s still not the Ritz, but it’s not bad for a freshman dorm.

We facetimed his dad and put down the deposit! Whew!

We put down my daughter’s deposit yesterday. Whoo hoo! My older son got his acceptance to the American University in Beirut a couple of days ago, too. I’ll have one kid in Pennsylvania and one in Lebanon! Ack.
