And the deferred applicants...?

I was deferred the other day and am dying to know how many deferred applicants are admitted in the spring. The deferral completely crushed me and I really hope that I still have a decent chance of acceptance. So if anyone knows how many are eventually admitted, please let me know!

Roughly 1/3 of approximately 5500 EA applicants were accepted this week. I’m estimating 10 to 20% were deferred to RD. How many deferred students get accepted RD will depend upon a number of factors, probably too numerous to try and quantify at this point. While this percentage never seems to be broadcast, I estimated it at 50% several years ago in a post to try and determine the percentage of EA applicants getting accepted vs. pure RD applicants. If you were deferred, you have the “right stuff”, but admissions may want to see one more semester of grades, etc. before deciding. Keep in mind that of all the EA applicants who thought their stats were strong enough to get in early, 50% or more were rejected outright. I will bump the old post up to the top if I can find it.

Thank you so much for this info. It’s too bad that ND makes it so difficult to find!

Not to panic you, but it depends heavily on the quality of the RD applicants. I was deferred last year. Everyone I heard about who was deferred last year was placed on the waitlist, including myself. This is not everyone, just all of the twenty or so I heard of. Nobody got in off the waitlist last year (at least, that’s what they told us on the waitlist; apparently seven got in which probably means athletes/donor families/something ridiculous that Notre Dame is embarrassed to admit to those they let go). Now, what you need to do as a deferred student is immediately send an email or phonecall to the admissions counselor. Say, “I was deferred and I wonder what may have been missing on my application that I could include or improve on for the Regular Decision cycle”. 95% chance they say that there was nothing wrong or missing, there was just an unprecented (a kind lie) number of quality applicants and that you can keep in contact if you have more questions. Then you send an email every other week or so with any question you can think of. If you communicate, they remember your name. If they remember you, they care about the outcome of your application and are much more likely to want you in. Notre Dame’s biggest thing is communication. Call, visit, email, etc. That’s what will make the difference for you and ensure you get in. Deferred is a great thing, actually. You know you’re good enough. Now you have a whole two-three months to prove to them why you’re worthy. No more applications, just you trying to stand out. Trust me on these things, and you’ll do fine. Believe me, if someone had told me this last year, I’d have found a way to be in South Bend. Haha. Good luck, bud.

I was deferred last year, then accepted RD. I retook the SAT, did better, and got As for another semester. I didn’t do anything else, like contact admissions, but that would probably be helpful (it can’t hurt, at the very least). However, I don’t think you should incessantly call them just to keep in contact; send a letter expressing your interest, but show that you’re only doing so because you have things to say. Obviously everyone applying is interested, so mere interest can’t set you apart.

If you retook the SAT/ACT (probably too late to do so now? I’m not sure) and did better, send those. Send your grades for the fall semester. If you can write a good letter of interest, send that. But ultimately, you’re just going to have to ride out the wait. Good luck.

P.S. [Here’s last year’s RD thread](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-notre-dame/1108845-official-notre-dame-class-2015-rd-decisions.html), some people who got in listed that they were deferred EA. It should give you an idea for your chances.

Does anyone have any more advice for those who were deferred in EA, other than sending them first semester grades of senior year? I just got my deferral letter yesterday.

I was deferred from another school but accepted to ND. I am only going to update them once when u get my semester grades on meaningful things that have changed to not waste their time. I’m going to inform them of progress on research I am doing and do anything I can to get straight A’s (which is pretty inporrtant). I wouldn’t contact them just to contact them, they might just get annoyed if it obviously serves no purpose.

Okay, thank you! I know I’ll send them my first semester of grades and notify them that I recently became an Illinois State Scholar. Are you going to send another rec letter?

I was deferred last year EA and then accepted RD. Definitely do your best to finish out your first semester. I didn’t end up sending another letter of rec. You could maybe contact them to say that you’re still interested/update your file if you have anything to add. Good luck.

@freckles12 I am not sending an additional letter of rec but I had 2 additional ones with my application so I don’t really need to send one. I think sending another rec letter is a great idea! It could give the committee more insight on you. I would do it. The school I got deferred from said it is beneficial to do so.

picklechicken37: Okay, thank you! I sent in 2 rec letters from teachers originally from teachers so I might try to get one from an extracurricular moderator.
sdca2013: Thank you so much! I just finished finals last week, and so far, I have straight As, just waiting on one more grade to be posted. Did you submit anything other than first semester of senior year grades?

@sdca2013 if you don’t mind me asking, could you tell me exactly what you did after you were deferred? i.e. did you send in your semester grades? also, which school did you apply to? i found out yesterday that i had been deferred from their engineering school…im just really disappointed right now :(

thank you!

Last year my daughter was deferred to RD then accepted. She emailed her regional rep the day she received her deferral, expressed that ND was her first choice and asked if there was anything she could do to improve her application. She kept in contact with the rep through the winter and sent an additional rec, as well as updates for a few honors she received. I believe they require that your first semester grades be submitted. And ^ you don’t apply to a specific school at ND. All freshman are enrolled in the First Year of Studies.

ejcclc: Did your daughter submit her additional supplements through her regional rep? I plan on contacting mine after Christmas. Do you know how she sent her new honors, via e-mail or Word docs perhaps? I was thinking about sending a resume I had to make for other colleges but I don’t want to overdo it and annoy an admissions counselor.

^ She just corresponded via email. The additional rec was sent directly to ND from the recommender.

Okay, thank you so much ejcclc! I was not sure how I was supposed to go about contacting an admissions rep. I only have 3 things to add and my semester grades!

Your semester grades will be submitted by your counselor. Make sure he/she does submit them. My daughter’s counselor also used that as an opportunity to add to his original recommendation.
