Does anyone know the 9th grade dorms and layout of rooms?

I’m not sure of the dorms and their names, but (I think) there are five for freshman girls.

Dorm rooms come in two typical sizes: singles, doubles, and sometimes triples. PA, because it is overenrolled, will probably have many more doubles/triples than they have in past years. PA also has something called a three-room double, which is a double with two single bedrooms and a common room, but I’m not sure whether that is an option for freshmen.

@pdl100 thanks for the info. What do you mean PA is “over enrolled”?

Every time a school goes through their admissions process, they use data from past years to estimate their “yield”- how many accepted kids actually enroll. They then over-accept for their class, expecting a handful of people not to matriculate, so if they want a class of 300 kids, they might accept 350. If 325 of those kids enroll, they’ve overenrolled and will need to either hope someone gets cold feet or scramble for beds in the fall, making singles into doubles and doubles into triples.

The junior (9th grade) girls dorms are:

Nathan Hale (~40 girls) – Pine Knoll Cluster
Isham (~18 girls) – West Quad North Cluster
Double Brick House (~14 girls) – Abbot Cluster
Hearsey House (5 girls) – Flagstaff Cluster

To reinforce pd100, Andover is overenrolled, so they will be scrambling for beds.

@skieurope and @pdl100 do you know how many students Andover has over enrolled? The junior class?

For the freshman class, I heard it was about fifteen extra girls, not including the guys. So quite a few. I’m not sure whether that’s accurate. I also know that PA had expected a yield of about 80% and received a yield of about 86%, so it’s a fair amount of extras.

I wouldn’t worry about it very much. The school will deal with it properly, and it’ll work out well. If you need a single, just request it and mention your desire for it. Having a roommate isn’t a huge burden or problem, either. Just personal preference for the most part.

I think 15 freshman girls is on the high side. While I do not believe that Jim Ventre publicly said what the target admit number was, traditionally ~350 new students set foot on the Hill each year. This year 366 students accepted. The current # of beds is 838, although it has been as high as 855 in recent years, so the school will figure it out.

I have always had this question: Instead of over-enrolling students, why don’t schools accept just the exact number of students and then go to the wait list to fill the rest? Is there any reason for it?

I completely agree. @patronyork

@patronyork I agree too, because not only will it lower the acceptance rate, but it will reduce the craziness.
