Throughout this whole process I was sure I was going to get rejected at both schools. For that reason I discarded them in my rankings. At the beginning of this process they were my top choices, but when I started to realize how hard they were to get into, I started gravitating towards the Hill. Half a year later, and a realize that Andover and Exeter were my favorites. I can't decide which one I want to attend. After receiving my package I was ecstatic, and was in love with Andover, but now the allure has died down, and I can't decide. My parents say I can't go to revisits, so I designed this thread to contrast these two schools. What are their pros? What are their cons? Even individual reviews of each schools would be helpful! Just a place of information on both schools.

Also, if anyone has any insight on the Hill, Hotchkiss, or Choate, and thinks that I should choose them, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

Congratulations, Silverstag!

It is truly a shame that you can’t go to revisits. They are so helpful. I assume you are international and that is why you can’t attend?

No, I’ll just be on a school trip to Mexico that week =D

Call the schools! Sometimes they’ll let you work out a day for you to visit

They are very happy to work out an alternative date-- they will understand. In someways it is better not to go to revisit day bc there isn’t the razzamatazz and you will get a truer feel for the schools. If there is anyway you can go before you make a decision – do so… your gut will tell you where you belong. Each of these schools has its own special and different vibe.

If you didn’t receive an admissions decision package from Andover yet, does that mean you’ll be rejected? Has anyone gotten their letter or package yet?

I would go to Hotchkiss over Exeter, Exeter over Andover, Andover over Choate, but this order of preference isn’t on formed on any rational basis.

Andover. You will love it. It is a place where learning is treasured, you meet amazing people and develop relationships with amazing teachers.

Since there really aren’t very many people who have attended both A and E, actually comparing them is not feasible from a student perspective. Each student body loves their school.

We went to both revisit days, and many students are admitted to both Phillips, so we met many families in the same shoes. They are both fabulous schools. About half the families we toured with chose one, and about half chose the other. I have not heard any regrets either way. The schools have very different “feels” though, so a visit would be very wise before you commit the next X number of years of your life to a school.

Hey, if it gets to hard there is always eenie meenie miney mo. (Joke )

Andover has been the finest safety school since 1781.

^just kidding. Exeter and Andover are both fine schools. You cannot make a bad choice with either school.

Some differences. All Exeter courses are taught using the Harkness table, even math and science. Andover has many classes which are taught using a small group discussion-like format, but also has some taught using the traditional lecture format.

Andover weekday class schedules end early to mid afternoon, while Exeter students end classes around 6:00 PM. Exeter has some Saturday classes. During our tour of Andover, I thought the tour guide said Andover had no Saturday classes.

Both schools have great campuses, great facilities, great food, great teachers, and great student spirit. Both towns are quaint little towns. Exeter is close to the ocean which can make for fun, little excursions with classmates.

Echoing a post I made in another thread, I’d like to correct a few errors in the “Phillips Exeter Academy vs Phillips Academy Andover in Boarding Schools” comparison website from post #11 of this thread.

Be cautious, as not all of the facts posted are entirely accurate. For the most part it’s very good though.

I’m a current Exeter student, so I can only speak for the errors pertaining to Exeter.

The “Extracurriculars” portion written for both schools isn’t correct. There are many clubs that they didn’t list, and many that they listed as missing at Exeter which are thriving – “Chess Club” for example. For both schools, you’d be be better off emailing a student or going to the website to see what clubs are available.

Additionally, during 2012-2013, the average Exeter SAT score was 2099, as opposed to the 2074 listed on this website.

Another important correction is that Exeter’s faculty to student ratio is 5:1, not the 6.8:1 ratio listed on this website.

I didn’t check every other statistic, but those were the mistakes that stood out to me on Exeter’s side.

I gathered my statistics from the 2013 Exeter College Profile, which I highly recommend reading to any interested parents. It lists almost all relevant facts about the school, and displays them in a more comprehensive manner than the Exeter website does.

http://www.exeter.edu/documents/2013_Profile_for_Colleges(1).pdf

I’m not trying to be a homer to the school or persuade anyone in a certain direction; I’m just displaying some of the facts for people to say.

Happy reading.

Thanks. I didn’t click on those links as I’ve heard/read about those incidents but here is a question. My perception, based in part on attending the Parents in Action panel at the Trinity School for the past few years, is that while drinking is fairly prevalent among private school students in NYC (pregaming), drug use is not as common (though there is some pot use and also some use of ADHD drugs by kids without prescriptions). What is the deal at boarding schools? I’ve heard such conflicting stories. Some people say that there is more drug use and some say it is less because rules are stricter and the parties are on campus.

Dude, I have so let me tell this to you straight. At andover, there is are at least two dorm parents who reside in the dorm, while there are another 2 remote dorm councilers. Every night, two dorm parents are on duty and one is stationed at eah entrance to check who is coming in and out of the dorm. These dorm parents are on duty until final sign in at 11:00 pm where in which they still leave their doors open until 12:00 am. At parties, bags and purses have to be left outside and there are numerous chaperones who check to make sure nobody has pregamed and come to the dance. At the end of campus lines, campus security is on duty 24/7 to see if students are going into town to do drugz, where jn which they will detain any ine with suspicion and get them checked. There are also regular seaeches of rooms for fire hazards, drugs, and alcohol. If that doesn’t fit your standards fir security, then you might as well expect administration to keep students in straight-jackets and padded cells…

I think drug problems exist in all schools.

Congratulations on your exceptional achievement, Silverstag! It is truly amazing!

Since you have visited both schools for an interviews (I guess), what was your first impression on both? Which one did you like more? (even by a slightest margin)
Contact the school for an alternative. If nothing works, rely on your initial feeling toward the schools. Academically, you can’t go wrong with any.

No matter how hard you try to get to know the schools, you will only get the limited amount of knowledge unless you actually become a student there. So, at the end of the day, you have to rely on your own judgement and judgement involves luck. But you will do well at any school. Wish you all the best.

About Andover Drug Cases: Let’s not forget that andover is a bigger school and

bigger school= more students = more kids with different values= more kids with bad values = more kids who will use drugs =more drugs
