Andover Day Student Admission Chances

Are admissions for day students at Andover more or less competitive? Does anyone know the percentage of day student applicants accepted, average SSAT, etc.? Thanks!

If there is a small difference, it’s not statistically significant, IMO.

Yes. Jim Ventre and his admissions team, but they are not telling. Again, you should assume that there is no statistically significant difference in stats between accepted day students and accepted boarders.

Okay, thanks! Also wondering, how do people know they “went 10 for 10” on their interviews? I have read this in several threads. My interviews seemed to go very well, but how does one find their scores?

In my experience, there are feeder schools for lots of day private schools including slots for day students at boarding schools. Pike School in Andover for instance is a feeder private school for Andover. If you don’t go to a feeder school or again are hooked in some way (recruited athlete), it will be difficult. Admissions can tell you how many spots there are for day students. You have to be within so many miles and therefore only some towns are eligible within the designated radius.

Honestly? At best, it’s because the kid does not know how much they do not know. At worst, it is because the kid has an inflated opinion, in my opinion. The same can be applied when the kid says that their recs are 10/10 when they have not read the recs. And even if they had read the rec, they cannot compare it to other recs written by the teacher. So pay no attention to what other applicants are writing in chance threads - focus on your own application.

Thank you both for your replies. I knew this was a long shot from the start. We are not wealthy so not only would I have to be accepted, I would have to be granted enough financial aid. I do not go to a feeder school, I go to public school. I’m white and female. I live a few towns away, so I won’t be a fun new pin in their maps to show off. I just love to learn and am intrigued by the endless possibilities at these schools. I did not take any classes to help prep for the SSAT because it took me quite a while to talk my parents into letting me apply. I scored a 90th percentile/2200 and I know that is not that high for these schools. I do play multiple instruments, but I am sure there are prodigies in other countries who do all that and more. I do a lot of volunteering and have won some awards for good citizenship and that sort of thing. There are also 300 kids in my grade in my really crowded public school and I have no idea how my recommendations will be from guidance since she met me for the first time the day I had to ask for the rec. Ha ha. I wasn’t really groomed for this like I sense most of the applicants were, but I’m hoping they will take a chance on me! I would love to go to school somewhere where everyone is not the same. Where everyone there loves to learn! If not, it was fun touring the campus and meeting some interesting faculty and dreaming for a bit. At the very least I’m getting some good practice for college. Best of luck to everyone applying!

@bookwormgrade8 You seem like a nice person and a top student, and an interesting candidate. If you came across this way also in your interviews, I’d say you stand a great chance. Andover says they want nice students and you certainly qualify. What about Brooks school? It would be great to find other possibilities for day school just to enhance your chances. Is Winsor too far? Good Luck. I and I am sure many others here will be rooting for you!

Thanks, @preppedparent. I will have to look into Brooks School and Winsor. I am not familiar with either. I definitely want to go to a big school with a lot of diversity and big science and music departments.

One of my very favorite people went to Winsor… on her way to Harvard.

Your post reminds me of my own public school girl. Best of luck!

Yes a lot of kids from Pike go to PA. Acceptance average around 16/yr. That includes PA faculty kids who attend Pike though, which varies from year to year. Some students do chose not attend even if they are admitted. It is also becoming increasingly harder for “feeder” school kids.

I have heard PA it is easier for day student spots. There is a smaller percentage of applicants for the spots. And you aren’t competing with kids from all over the world for the boarding spots. Brooks/Gov’s are very hard to get a day spot. Many kids who live locally end up boarding to secure a spot.

I’m sure the AOs at PA have seen applications from your town before. They know that the public schools kids don’t have the same hands on approach from the counselors as a school like Pike, Brookwood or Shore. They have seen it all. Know that you did your best and that getting in isn’t the be all, end all.

Wishing you luck!
