Hey there,

I'm going to be a freshman at Andover next year, and I just got my housing info. Flagstaff cluster, Hearsey House (girls dorm) with a roomate. I was wondering if I could just get a little more info on both? A lot of people say that flagstaff is the best cluster (even ppl who aren't in it) but they don't exactly say why. Also, what are the dorms and bathrooms like? How "nice?" How big?
Thx!

flagstaff is the best cluster because all the dorms are right in the center of campus. most of the others are fairly far away.hearsey is the only freshman dorm in flagtaff and has like 10 people and it also means you pretty much automatically get into one of the flagstaff upperclassmen dorms which are really sought after.
the house councilor in hearsey is an extremely nice young english teacher

Well, my dad lurks on this site, and couldn’t help but notice this post and point me towards it - I was in Hearsey last year, y’see.

So…

Flagstaff (is awesome):
- Centered around the flagstaff in the middle of campus, right next to Commons (food!).
- Mostly upperclassmen, which can get a bit awkward depending on how well you and upperclassmen get along. Pretty much only during the munches, though - there’s not a ton of cluster segregation or what have you.
- The cluster dean is Clyfe Beckwith (we call him Clyfe), who teaches physics (and volleyball, I think?). He is correspondingly awesome.

Hearsey:
-Five 9th graders and one prefect last year; I believe it’s four/five 9th graders and two prefects this year. So, small. Second smallest on campus, I think.
-Only freshman dorm, yep.
-House counselor is Ms. Chase (no relation to head of school), hard-grading English teacher who cooks for her dorm (cookies, snacks, etc.) Very nice.
-Complements last year, and I’m not sure if they’ve changed, were Ms. Svec (German teacher) and Mr. Shaw (history/social science), who lives across the street. (He’s got a dog, Spooner. Large and friendly. Go pet him.) They are also both lovely people.
-Socks the cat comes by sometimes. He’s Mr. Kuta’s, hangs out in the basement ‘cause it’s warm. Will come up if you coax him.
-Both of the doubles in Hearsey are nice and fairly large, although one-rooms. The bathroom’s not big, and nor are the halls/common room (and, well, the basement’s okay, but more than a bit messy. Plan out your laundry).
-Mr. McGraw, English teacher, used to live there.
-It used to be a senior boys’ dorm.
-Furthest dorm in Flagstaff away from campus (technically right on the edge), which isn’t saying much. Approximately 2 minutes to my math class last year, and less to Commons. (To be fair, I was running. Still.) If you’re into music, it’s further away from Graves than plenty of others, but certainly bearable.

I had a good time there last year - if you’d like, PM me and I’ll send you my email so we can talk more.

Good luck in the fall!

Are day students assigned to a cluster? If so, are they all grouped into one of them, or are they spread out among many?

Day students are assigned to a cluster, yes, spread out among them (not in even amounts, though. Flagstaff had three day student freshmen last year).

@ca_condor…even though my d is going to Deerfield I am so impressed with the information that you provided from your bs experience. It is so wonderful for a new bs mom see how bs students are as wonderful as you are. This is not only a testament to your school but even more to your parents and family. Bs dont make kids, just makes them better, based on what they were sent.

Thank you dad for asking you to comment.

Good Luck & Best Wishes :-)

Haha I know someone who’s going to be in Hearsey next year! And tons of former hearsey.

The HC is really nice there, as others have said.

hahahahah omg i know who this is ^

Hmm… Andover '14…

I can guess who you are?
