Andover Summer Program Worth It?

Nephew was accepted to the summer program. I have been surprised at some of the kids Andover has taken for the summer, kids with lower averages and scores. Is this a good learning situation for a very bright student? Does anyone recommend other programs where there's still time to apply?.

I've never heard of a kid NOT getting into a summer session at a top prep. school. Anyone can get in unless they're a drug addict or has been expelled from their school.

Also, the Andover summer session doesn't even have 50% of the faculty being actual Andover teachers.

I'm sure your nephew could benefit from the program if he puts forth a positive attitide and has a willingness to pursue his academic dreams. If he's not that mature yet, the Andover Summer Session might be a time where he goofs around with mediocre kids and wastes 5g.

I applied to Andover Summer Session and it seems great. If I get in, I plan on majoring in Speech and Debate and minoring in Accelerated First Year French. They get a few hours of homework per night, so it seems pretty rigorous to me. There's lots of activities to choose from as well such as squash, soccer, swimming, wiffleball, etc.

Actually, 50% of the summer session teachers are Andover faculty.

Not really. There are a TON of things that you could do which are a lot more impressive for less money.
I guess it's good for prospective students who don't know if they could live (or if their parents can let them go!) so far away, but for the most part, I wouldn't recommend it.

Went summer after 8th grade. Nothing special. Lots of kids who had been rejected from Andover who though it would help when reapplying. It was feel good, easy classes and high grades. Nothing at all near classes at SPS.

That's one of the reasons why I applied.. lol.

This thread is sort of discouraging. I thought that it would be a lot of fun and I could learn a lot at the same time.

You can, Jonathan! That is, if you make the most of it. You have to be mature to go there. You're going to need to be able to overcome mediocre people there.

Yeah... and one of the advantages of going there is that next fall I could start French II instead of French I.

I still think that I will have a lot of fun, learn a lot, and meet a lot of interesting people. I believe about a third of the students there are international.

It should be just fine Jonathan. My nephew may well go. He doesn't have the stats for Andover and getting a taste is a good things for many.

Nothing wrong with the summer program. Lot of Andover faculty--some Andover kids even, although I imagine one wouldn't want to spend an additional 5 weeks there during the summer, frankly our 9 months on campus is enough. There are also a lot of international students if I recall correctly...

Oh, and I know that some Andover kids go there for remedial work. A friend of mine went to compensate for some bad grades. But it's a lot of fun and really gives you a feel of Andover at its best--what with the gorgeous New England summer and diverse environment.

For the goals you have, Jonathan, it should be fine--don't worry, work hard, and enjoy yourself there! Good luck tomorrow with that day school.

i dont think anyone gets rejected for summer program. I went to andover summer section right before I went to hotchkiss. It really did prepare me a bit for the BS life, but if you ask me whether the sole academics is worth the price, I have to say no. Academics in a top prep's summer program is NOTHING comparable with the school itself
