Andover vs. Exeter

anyone could help me give a comparison between these two schools?
I really got confused when I talked with my friends. Someone said "Exeter is indeed the school every kid wanna go". But others believed "Andover is the most gorgeous! Just like Harvard vs. Yale, Andover is always more selective and prestigious". (though ironically regarding school colors, i suppose harvard and exeter, andover and yale are more fitted.)

Thx for help!

One is no more selective than the other. It really depends on where you feel at home. Each has its own personality. Exeter is better for math and science; Andover is better for humanities, social sciences, etc. My son was accepted at both but liked Exeter better.

Visit the schools and see which one feels more like home.

They are equal in prestige and selectivity even though I don't like to admit it. Many people say that Exeter is better for math and science, but Andover's AP Physics classes are ranked first in the nation, so think beyond the stereotypes. The feel of the schools are very different. Andover's campus is pretty spacious, spread out and has a more laid back feel while Exeter's is more compact. I felt at home at Andover, but something felt a little out of place when I toured Exeter.

I think you will enjoy this thread: <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=262077&highlight=difference%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=262077&highlight=difference</a></p>

Andover seems a bit less formal to me than Exeter. Andover's Saturday classes are rare, they don't have a dress code, things like that. Also, I felt like Exeter was a bit more work-oriented when I visited, but take that with a grain of salt. It was just my experiance.

wow. thanks so much for your replies!

i am wondering why i am more humanities-oriented, but it seems i feel more fitted to exeter atmosphere..... actually just first impression.

I went to Exeter and I am much better at the humanities than math/science. It was, without question, the best experience of my life yet. History, english, and language work perfectly with the harkness system. Exeter's history department is truly out of this world. The math/sciences are strong, too, as people have said. Being someone who didn't love math going in, the teachers in math and science had such a passion for what they were doing, it was impossible not to "get it."

Obviously I am biased, but I just want to make sure that you don't get the idea that Exeter is the "right fit" only if you're strong in math and science.

Conversely, don't get the the same idea that Andover is only a place for the humanities. :)

Really though, both Andover and Exeter have aspects that are more appealing to certain groups of people. It's really just about where you feel the most comfortable; when you're touring the school, you should be able to feel as if you could fit in there.

Chao, your username is like Chaos'. He also wants to go to Exeter. :D He's obsessed, actually.

As I am with Choate and Njdana is with Peddie. :)

everybody much more laid back and confident at A.Friendly , campy and chatty at E.Only been to each twice but got the same impression both times.Admissions at both were pros .Depends on how I was feeling at the time which was my favorite, but I definitely have one.

did you apply to any safeties last year, francis?

This is like comparing apples and oranges (everyone knows oranges are clearly better :D).

Francis you go to boarding school?

I prefer apples. :D

I do not believe in the safety.Boarding school is not the end all if you attend a nationally ranked day school and do well.BS may not be in the cards ,but who would want to attend your 3rd or 4th choice just to board.I have visited princeton ,harvard, yale, duke along with many preps. It has nothing to do with applications. College will be a different story when a safety is critical.I feel sympathy for those on this board who feel they have to settle with a boarding option.Life is too much fun to raise blood pressure over the admissions process.

I agree, Francis. I've never been interested in safeties as boarding schools. But I do argue that some kids find it imperative to board and therefore need to apply to "safeties". But for the kids looking for an extremely challening education, I wouldn't recommend it.

If it is imperative then the term safety is really easy.Would that kid be just as happy if Gov Dummer is the only accept?Maybe I have missed the point , but if a student is borderline, why not skip the endless "chances" talk and view a top tier as a lottery win.Enjoy the ride, you built the car.Unless of course your your parents already own the Bugatti.

Some kids are problem students or have learning disabilities and therefore have to go to a lower-tiered school to fix their problems.

Just because everyone doesn't apply to a top-tiered school doesn't mean that they don't need it.

sorry i was not clear.Since this is the A. vs. E thread i thought it would be better if folks who were a long shot should not worry so much. If they muste to go to BS for LD or behavior there are options all over the US.sometimes I think the forum Should read "elite boarding schools".segmentation narrows the information flow.

Andover is definitely better for these reasons:

It's closer to Boston than Exeter.

According to stereotypes, which probably aren't true, Exeter students are super geeky.

Andover's Summer Session looks cooler than Exeter's.

Andover sounds much better than Exeter. I don't like x's.

That's all. :)
