I have been placed on their 2013 Waiting List.

Does anyone out there know statistical/past facts about their waiting lists?

Ex.
1) How many are on it (general)?
2) How many are accepted from it?
3) How do the admissions officers pick applicants from the waiting list?

etc.

Please reply with as much information as you know, I'm super curious ;P

Thanks!!

Andover is one of the most popular boarding schools. [Phillips Academy -](http://www.andover.edu/Admission/WelcomeAdmittedStudents/236Class/Pages/default.aspx) This provides somes statistics on their 2013 admitted class. Keep in mind this is for all grade levels. I figure they probably accepted around 250 for freshmen and expect around 200 to matriculate. People are picked from the waiting list essentially like

Oh, a star soccer player turned us down, lets take another star soccer player from the pool and accept them.

All schools already accept more applicants than they have room for because they know some will choose to attend another school. So the wait list is for situations over and above that. In a popular prestigious school such as Andover, there is not going to be much movement off the wait list.

I don’t think anybody here could give you the numerical details that you want. But the idea is that they would pick a similar student if someone paid their deposit but later declined. So if it was a sophomore boy who declined, they would most likely fill the spot with another sophomore boy. And if they were expecting his tuba expertise to fill out their marching band, they would look for someone on the list who plays tuba.

The very first thread in this forum will give you lots of info about WL.

Lol, I got accepted at Andover and I play Tuba. (Sorry for the double post)

Thanks for the info guys!
This year, Andover’s acceptance rates were exceptionally low compared to their other years (according to their website): 13%. So congrats HelloGuy and others who were accepted! I’m just wondering how this low acceptance rate will come into play for those on the Waiting List… Does a low acceptance rate mean a low acceptance rate for the WL?

No, all it means is that the wait list was very very hard to get on.

I also understand that a record number of boys applied this year, especially for a spot in the ninth grade. Only 11% of male applicants were accepted.

Ugh… I think I will write a letter to the admission’s office to let them know I am more than interested in attending. Obviously, it won’t get me off any sort of list but I’m pretty sure it won’t do any harm to just let them know…
