Could I major in Health Sciences to be an Anesthesiologist?
I went on multiple websites and they I could major in health science, but i’m no sure .
Also, should i major in Health science to become an RN?
Sorry for the mistakes , I was typing really fast.
You can major in anything for Medical school to become an Anesthesiologist. You need to take the Medical School required courses to apply.
Most medical schools require the following courses:
One year of Biology with lab.
One year of General Chemistry with lab.
One year of Organic Chemistry with lab.
One semester of Biochemistry.
One year of Physics with lab.
One year of English
You need to check each Medical schools website to determine the required courses. Also you will need a high GPA, high MCAT score and medically related EC’s.
To be come a Nurse:
There are a few different ways to become a Registered Nurse. There is a nationwide certification test, and you need to graduate from a program accredited by your state board of nursing in order to be eligible to take the test.
- One is to get an Associates degree, which is often earned at a community college. There is often a waiting list to get into community college nursing programs, and they may make you do well in prereq classes before you are accepted. However, your job prospects will be better with a BSN degree.
- Another option is to enter a BSN program as a nursing major from high school. These are known as direct entry programs. However, these programs are not common in some states.
- Another option is to enter a 202 program. This involves spending 2 years taking prereqs, and then applying in a competitive manner to become a nursing major during your sophomore year. The difficulty of being admitted greatly varies from college to college.
- Another option is to get a bachelors degree in another field, and then get a second degree that allows you to take the RN exam. This option is often called "accelerated" for the second degree. There typically is very little federal, state or institutional financial aid for the second degree.
Okay thanks, but for RN do I have to get my associates degree or I can go straight to major to become an RN?
What do I do after getting my bachelors in Health Sciences, if I’m going to be an RN?
Also, If I graduate with my B.S in health sciences , what is the next step in becoming an Anesthesiologists?
How do you get into Medical school, like what is the next step after your bachelors?
If you want Nursing, I would look for a direct admit Nursing program where you start as a College Freshman. If you attend community college, you can do your Nursing pre-req’s there and then transfer into a Nursing program at a 4 year university or attend a 4 year university as a Pre-Nursing major, take the pre-req courses and after 2 years apply to the Nursing school.
I would not pursue a Health Sciences major for Nursing.
Also, If I graduate with my B.S in health sciences , what is the next step in becoming an Anesthesiologists?
You need to go to Medical school to become an Anesthesiologist so you would get your Bachelor’s degree, take the MCAT, have some Hospital experience and apply to Medical school.
Okay, well i want to be a registered nurse and Anesthesiologist. I know that’s a lot. I want to start off as a Rn and work my way up, is that possible or would I have to do a double major? I honestly do not know, because I do not want to be overwhelmed in my freshman yr in college. I’m honestly lost at the moment.
I think what you mean is that you want to become a nurse anesthetist. They work in ORs under the supervision of an anesthesiologist. You should find a way into a BA program for nursing. Then get a job nursing in a hospital ICU. Then get into a nurse anesthetist program.
I think op is asking how to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, Anesthesiologist is a Doctor, not a nurse.
You can get that certification by doing:
CRNAs are one type of many Advanced Practice Nurses (APN). Therefore they must have a bachelor’s degree in nursing or other applicable field, and be a licensed RN by passing the NCLEX-RN, the national licensing exam. Once licensed as an RN, one must have at least one year of nursing experience before gaining admission into a graduate nurse anesthetist graduate program, according to the AANA. Most nurse anesthetist graduate programs take two or three years to complete. After completing the graduate education, one must pass the national certification exam in order to practice legally as a CRNA.
Responsibilities of CRNA include
Most CRNAs are employed by hospitals, and work in a surgical environment, such as an operating room. CRNAs also may work in outpatient surgery centers and medical offices. According to the American Nurses Association, CRNAs are responsible for delivering over 65% of all anesthetics administered to patients in the US. There are over 30,000 CRNAs practicing in the US, and just over half of them are men, based on information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the ANA.
No, actually what I’m meaning is that I want to be a Rn , but I also want to be an Anesthesiologist.
However, if I become and Nurse Anesthetist could I potentially become an Anesthesiologist?
An RN is a nurse. An anesthesiologist is a doctor. There are two different career paths. While there have been nurses who have decided to return to school to become a doctor, that is not the normal path. I don’t know why you keep talking about majoring in health sciences. That isn’t necessarily the best major for either career path. In my state, if you want to be a nurse, you apply to colleges as a nursing major. At the end of 4 years you graduate with a BS in nursing and you take the test. If you want to be a doctor, you can major in anything as long as you take the required courses outlined by another poster. In order to get into medical school and become an anesthesiologist you must have very high grades, very high test scores, and medical related shadowing and volunteering.
Well, I do know they’re two different career paths. I know, okay,so anyway what I’m asking is what is the best path to go because the websites I have visited told me these things, is the reason why I keep saying that. It’s not my fault, I’m just doing research and looking for help. No need to be hostile, because I’m honestly trying to understand this.
I’m saying that I have to different careers . I want to be an Rn and Anesthesiologist, but I’m just going to focus on nursing and go back to school if I want to be an Anesthesiologist.
to become a anesthesiologist, you must FIRST be accepted at a Medical school to be trained as a Dr. [ only 50% of applicants are accepted] then take 4 years of classes which will cost you ++$300,000. THEN you must be accepted by an Anesthesia residency program, which is ALSO highly competitive, which take you another 3-4 years of training. THEN you need to pass your Board Exams. Only then are you able to practice as an anesthesiologist.
That is what it takes to become an anesthesiologist.- 8+ years of training + lots of $$$$$.
there are no short cuts.
Lol, okay thanks @menloparkmom , I’m just going to go into Nursing, then later on in life, I’ll see if i want to continue.
I have a friend who was an RN, and eventually went to med school to become an anesthesiologist. But if you asked her today, she’d say she should have tried to go straight to med school. Why do both? She was in her late 30s by the time she finished med school.
I suppose getting a nursing degree is good fallback if you don’t get into med school, which is very hard to do. You need the prerequisite courses discussed above and strong MCAT scores. But a nursing major is no walk in the park. The coursework is challenging.
OP, Any thing is possible, but very unlikely. I have heard RN went to med school and become a doctor, it is rare and unusual. Once you attain the CRNA status, you might not want to back to med school. It has to do not only your personal goal, but also your financial status.
As everyone know, med school is very expensive and very few scholarships are rewarded. A RN is a professional degree and license, you can make a decent living with that license, the incentives to go back to med school spend upwards of $350,000 and upto 4 years of residency to become an Anesthesiologist will be diminished with time. Once you attain CRNA status, the incentive to go back to med school is very very little as CRNA is almost like a doctor, with lower pay scale. Besides, to become an Anesthesiologist is not easy, even you go to a med school. Not only you need a high GPA and USMLE in med school, but also you need to fortunate enough to be matched in to Anesthesiology Residency, Around 50% of the residencies are Primary Care . It is a long haul and full of risks.
@intparent Thanks, I know its not easy, but its better than going straight into Anesthesiology. Right now I’m in a program at my high school. (Medical Magnet program) , Hopefully that will do me some good, when I go to college.
