Anesthesiologists

Hello im in the army and im looking to get out soon and go to school. I want to get a career in Anesthesiologists. Can anyone give me any info about the schooling and or job that would help would be great.

To become an anesthesiologist requires 4 years of undergrad, 4 years of medical school, and 4 years of residency, and another year, if you decide to do residency.

You can also look into becoming an anesthesiology assistant (AA). Its 4 years undergrad and 2 years for masters. You would be supervised by an anesthesiologist.

The last route is getting a nursing degree and then doing a masters to become a certified nurse anesthetist (CRNA). The majority are supervised by anesthesiologist, but they do have independent practice in some states.

As an anesthesiologist you are responsible for the cases with the most comorbidities and highest complexity. If you work in the anesthesia care team model, you are the “director” of the care team and you supervise 4 AA/CRNA.

A further note, AAs are not recognized in all states, so if you are considering that route, practice location may be an issue.
