well my enrollment window is on the 14th... and i just checked a while back. most of my classes were already enrolled to max capacity. and im sure all of them r going to be gone by the time its our (3rd window people) turn.

this is ridiculous.

i will now be forced to take classes that i am not primarily interested in.

i cant help but think at this moment that i'v got the shaft. what makes this more confusing/infuriating is that when i constructed my primary bookbag there was place in all my classes (well, obviously) and now there isnt.

im payin as much as everyone else but im still at a GREAT disadvantage. its just not fair. (and let us conviniently forget the aid duke has given me for now.)

its just that i was so in love with duke and now this is like a slap in the face.

anyone else in the same position as me?
im so angry right now im thinkin of writing to the enrollment people...

Thats what it said for my classes too...like that some of the classes were maxed out...a lot of people had the same trouble and were afraid they wouldn't get them

But turns out the classes magically free up space and let people enroll in them. atleast thats what happened for some people. No joke, it happened for Math 41 and Econ 55 atleast.

geez I'm sorry about the situation your in. If it makes you feel any better, I heard in another thread that Duke rotates around the order in which ppl sign up for classes each semester. Since u were in the last gr. this time, u will be in one of the earlier grs. next time and those who were first this time will be last next time. Something like that. Since you still have another day b4 registration, why dont you spend some time and look around different department's classes on ACES. I'm sure you will find a class or two that sounds interesting and has space that you might not have considered b4. Remember, its not a life or death situation if u dont get into every class you need, for a major, etc... cuz theres a lot of general ed reqs you need to fulfill anyways. Taking some of these other courses are just as impt as lets say, taking the intro courses for ur prospective major(s).

First, during the drop/add period, people (like you) are going to be able to switch out of current classes for more free spots. Many people registering currently may change their mind down the road. Also, you will have first window next semester, so don't be too elegiac.

If he's last this time, he won't be first next time.

This has been the story of my academic life at Duke thus far, only let me tell you something-- you're not going to end up with the shaft all the time like I've had. First semester was a mess, second semester I got the last registration date, didn't get anything I wanted. I will tell you something though, my two favorite classes from second semester are the two best classes I've had at Duke (maybe I can even argue the two classes that have really opened my eyes to new topics and ideas and the two classes that I really, and truly loved every second of) and neither of those classes were in my primary or alternate bookbag initially, and I only found them through freaking out and talking to anyone I could think of right before I had to register. Look harder-- I can even help with recommendations. Don't be afraid to look in a department you'd never consider. Things have a way of working out. That being said, take advantage of add/drop. Also, if there's a course you absolutely must take (and a course that you're not going to drop within add/drop), get in contact with the professor... the prof has the final ability to extend a seat in the class for you, and many times, they're very willing to do so.

The rest of my story.. so spring semester I was 5th of a 5 day rotation, but then Duke changed it to three days for this coming semester, and 4th of 5 days still is 3rd of 3 days, so I registered last.... AGAIN. And I am shut out of every single course in my major department, but it's okay because I'm just filling up my schedule w/ science and foreign language and the stuff you have to do at some point, and what a better time to get things out of the way if there's space in those classes but not in what I really want. I remember crying to people though, saying my parents are paying 40G for me to go to a school where I can't take what I want, and half my classes I hate for one reason or another (crappyprofessor, boring, syllabus lied--class really about something totally different!), and how it wasn't fair because my roommate and best friend take large classes and always get the first day of enrollment (or second) and it doesn't even make a difference because on the last day I can get into their classes, but if I had their day, I'd actually get into my 15 person classes. It's not a fair system, but it will get better eventually.

So many people are in your position, have been in your position, and will be in your position. It's almost like a freshmen tradition (that is unfortunately extending into sophomore year for me...)

exactly my sentiment at this moment...

and bluestar7- thanks for your advice. i'll see how things shape up tomorrow and i'll get in touch with you for advice.. thanks once again..

THIS IS JUST BULL***** !!! i cannot believe this. the only writing 20 course left is "restoring nature" what utter rubbish.
and oh joy oh joy. both intro to philosophy classes are maxed out. and there are only 4 more seats left for econ.

and to think that im leaving behind my country because i wanted a "flexible" education. i will now have to spend 3 months studying things i have NO interest in.

im sad to say that my first experience with duke has been very disappointing.

There are three main intro polisci classes. I think American System has a few spots left. International Relations, the other intro polisci class, has 30 or so in it. Intro to Political Thought has a few spots left. I think IR would be your best bet, I'm not sure which one you wanted in particular.

Econ 51 has a few sections with space in it, though only one is at a decent time (like 1ish, the others are either at 3ish or early)

Math 41 has openings too, so you'll get a spot in there probably

So you'll probably get a spot in Math 41 and an intro poli class (though I don't know about a particular one), though I'm not sure about the Econ since there are very few left.

I'm on ACES looking at classes now too, report in tommorow about what you end up with

both econ and math have only 4 places left in them... :( i was finally able to get through to the aces site....i hope no one else registers in them..

im international.. so american system would be just totally alien to me and id rather not do that..

oh lord, and i have a DIAL UP CONNECTION.. so when the mad rush begins in tomo's allotment slot im sure to be beaten.. (56K connection....yeah, im screwed)

thanks alot thoughtprocess.. ill keep u updated..

Seriously, I wouldnt worry about this too much. You need a bunch of classes unrelated to your major anyway, and first year is the best time to experiment and see what you really like. And if you still REALLY want to get into certain classes, just wait for classes to start and the professor will prolly let u in the class during add/drop. I know this seems really unfair (and the same thing happened to me last year, except i had the fifth day out of five instead of the third out of three), but it will work out in the end and you may even find something that you may like a lot more than you thought u would.

so my amazing luck continued into the registration window openning where i clicked on the "enroll all" tab as soon as it opened.....and was 120 in line!! predictably i was locked out of ALL my classes. then i chose the only remaining seminar course : eng 29S and added it to my prim bookbag. and then the website conked out on me. it enrolled me for eng 29S and that it. the enrollemtn tab disappeared and i was unable to click on anything on the site. (this may have something to do with my 56K dial up connection..) so i caled up duke and thats when things started going right... (about time!)

i spoke with an academic dean and she was REALLY helpful. she logged into my ACES account and we built up a prim book bag for me over the phone... at this point i still random classes , but alteast i had somehtin..

eventually i landed up pretty fair- instead of econ 51D im in econ 01, instead of math 42 im in math 31L , im doin a pretty cool history course which i wouldn;'t have found otherwise.. and im doin the eng 29S course on imagined islands in eng lit O_o

well its not perfect, but its better than what id imagined yesterday..
