Animal Science or Biology to become a Vet?

I might transfer to Cal poly Pomona. I’m thinking about becoming a veterinarian and I’ve been looking into Animal Science or Biology. I know you could major in anything, but I’ve been really interested in the sciences. (Not to mention that my vet school pre reqs get filled as an added bonus) How is the Animal Science Major at Cal Poly Pomona? I’ve been a little confused on what it really is. I want my emphasis to be companion and small animals if I become a vet. People have told me so many different things like Meat processing, production, farming, having so much to do with Livestock… I don’t want any of that! Well, I guess I wouldn’t mind working with an occasional horse or sheep on farms or stables for the experience. But animal science kind of confuses me. I’ve been doing more research on it but there is some flexibility and I see that you can learn a lot of things from Animal Science that looked interesting which would be great preparation for vet school, not to mention more hands-on. But some of the things look iffy. I’m just not sure! I’ve also been considering Biology or Zoology. What do you guys recommend? Any experiences with these programs?

You do not get to specialize in Companion and small animals until you finish Vet School. If you major in Animal Science or Animal Biology, you will take classes in all types of animals including Livestock, Equine etc… If you are not interested in these course then you should major in Biology or Zoology. Once you get into Vet School, you again will take classes pertaining to Large and small animals, so there is no way of getting out of those Agriculture (Farming) based classes.
