I got in as animal science major- and my goal after graduation is UC Davis vet school.
(i got rejected from uc davis, so it is either here or UCSB going in as pre-biology major)

I read on the website and such and the program seems very good and promising but does anyone else know the exact statistics of how successful graduates from this program are at going to vet schools, etc?

is anyone else thinking of going with this major/pre vet program? if so, what made you choose SLO?

I am seriously stuck between here and UCSB.

animal science at cpslo > than ucsb. The amount of hands-on experience you get from day one in your classes gives you a leg up. UCD vet is looking for experience and it carries about the same weight as any other admissions criteria.

That said, there were 9/25 acceptees from UCSB and only for the class of 2012 and only 6/44 from cpslo. But that is not the typical pattern. You can check the stats @ http://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/studentprograms/class_2012/statistics_2012.pdf

I have been haunting the ucdsvm accept stats for several years and the cpslo accept rate last year is not the norm.

Seems like you can’t go wrong with either school. Maybe you want to ask yourself if you’d rather live in SLO or IV.

I am in the same boat…wanting to go onto Vet School as UC Davis. I decided on going to Cal Poly because I wanted my classes to be as related to my career choice as possible and wanted to start early. I’m pretty sure at most schools you start taking your major-related courses your 3rd and 4th year but at Cal Poly you start your freshman. I have also visited UCSBs campus and in general liked the feel better at Cal Poly.

I’m kind of in the same boat as you guys but as for me I got rejected from both ucsb and ucd. So it looks like animal science at SLO is my only option right now. There are only two grad schools for dvm in California right? UCD and Western University of Health Science.

ah thank you for the stats historymom!

I think I still have a lot of thinking to do… and I am visiting UCSB and dropping by Cal Poly this week… so I guess I’ll see how it goes. After looking at the stats, I am even more divided than ever because both schools have pretty good stats! (and I understand Cal Poly is usually higher, right?)

It doesn’t sound like you can go wrong either way since UCSB clearly prepares students well too but Cal Poly is usually higher! In fact I have a family member there now who told me that the current group of students set to graduate this spring from UCDvet is composed of more people who did their undergrad @ CPSLO than those who did it @ UCD.

another thing to add-
reputation wise though, in the nation, could it be that ucsb may be better than slo? I know that at UCD vet school, they know how great cal poly is, but would other vet schools across the country know that as well?

Yes! Since there are so few vet schools and only slightly more true animal science programs the reputation CPSLO has for preparing future vets goes beyond CA borders.

I suggest you call some of the other schools OSU, CSU, WSU, A and M and ask them if they publicize their acceptance stats and if they know about and are enthused about CPSLO grads.

My son is a freshman at Cal Poly SLO. Majoring in Animal Science, pre-vet. He chose Cal Poly because of the hands-on. He worked in an Enterprise winter quarter - he worked with pregnant horses - checked on them, cleaned stalls, helped deliver the babies - where else can you do that - your freshman year? He has taken 4 classes in his major in his 1st 2 quarters of college. He is now leaning toward doing a double-major in Bio, which makes us happy and sad - happy that he’ll have many more options for careers with a Bio degree (in case the vet thing doesn’t work out), and sad that he will be at Cal Poly for 5 years (he needs to make friends with a bank for his 5th year!). He has to take so many bio classes, that with a few more, he’ll get a major in it. He loves Cal Poly (the dorm, the town, the college).

Hello,
I see your son was a freshman at Cal Poly in June 2008 as a pre-vet major. Can you tell me did that work out for him? Did he eventually get into Davis? My daughter got into Cal Poly and Davis and wants to be a veterinarian. She feels like she would get more of the college experience at Cal Poly. Any thoughts on that would be appreciated! Thank you!
