Animation + Graphic Design

Any "top" schools in Computer Science that also have a strong "graphic design/3d/animation" program?

Carnegie Mellon is probably the closest fitting your bill, but there is no specific integrated major per se. You'd have to integrate the art and CS classes yourself.

However, there are two good Master's-level programs. You could do a CS degree first then go to one of these.

U of Central Florida
http://fiea.ucf.edu/shield/showpage.php?page_id=1

Carnegie Mellon.
http://www.etc.cmu.edu/

NYU has a post-graduate program (a second BS degree)
http://www.scps.nyu.edu/departments/degree.jsp?degId=14

There are some undegraduate programs:

The one that looks the best is in Canada:
http://www.surrey.sfu.ca/c_students/ugrad/advising/outline/attachments/IA_DIAGRAM_TECHBC.pdf

These are similar to the above, but are in the US. Note the different mixtures of art/design to computer science/implementation:

Quinnipiac
http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x297.xml

Johnson&Wales
http://www.jwu.edu/soft/deg_graph.htm

ColorodoTech
http://www.coloradotech.edu/visual-communication_bachelor.asp

Art Inst of Pittsburg
http://www.aip.aii.edu/programs_detail.asp?PID=118

Art Inst of Philadelphia
http://www.aiph.artinstitutes.edu/programs_detail.asp?
extraid=595&ProgramID=49&degtype=3

Finally there is
This is a post-graduate program (a second BS) that may fit your bill

I have seen the facilities at Quinnipac and they look excellent (all Apple gear if that matters to you)

Dang I think I missed some deadline (sending the sat's or something) for Carnegie Mellon

Simon Fraser is $4200 per year and the deadline is Feb 15. The program is rock solid. The money you'll save will pay for two years at Carnegie Mellon ETC when you are done!

Isn't CMU's due Jan 1st?

Wow, then in that case I should apply there since they aslo rank high in AI.

I'm applying to CMU and am also really interested in graphic design/animation/comp sci. It's due jan 1st for comp sci...."visual arts" applications were due december 1st.

Penn has a Digital Media Design program that you should check out.

http://cg.cis.upenn.edu/norm/

peachykween-
Do you know of any good programs that have not been yet been mentioned?

I'm TOTALLY applying to digital media design - it's my top choice.

nightfly - on Pixar's site they have a list of schools good for all that kind of stuff. I'll try to find exactly where it is.

http://www.pixar.com/companyinfo/jobs/schools.html
and
http://www.etc.cmu.edu/about/similar_programs.htm

lol, im applying to digital media design too for u penn.

you are!?!? do you have a portfolio!? because I don't. Hahahaha.

Check out University of Pennsylvania's digital media program. Also Cornell University has a great looking Electronic Media program.

However, Penn has a nasty surprise for students. Some programs, such as communications and digital media are very popular. Thus, it is very difficult to get into the major. For example, you generally need a 3.5 GPA in freshmen/sophomore year to major in communications. This can be a very nasty surprise.

what?? we need a portfolio??

It depends on the school. For creative writing, you probably don't need a portfolio. For animation or digital design, you would. This is true at most of the schools mentioned.

university of hartford has a great new program IIT (interactive information technology), one of only 2 programs in the country. great for digital design, and associated with the Hartt School (one of the top art schools in the country). no portfolio required. good aid.

We looked at Hartford. They do, indeed, seem to have a very good art program. Their problem, in my humble opinion, is that they are mediocre liberal arts programs.

penn's DMD program has an "optional" portfolio
