How's the weather at UMich? Does it get a lot of snow? I'm from NYC so I can deal with reasonably cold weather but massive snowfall is another thing.

the winter weather in a2 is cold and snowy but we usually don't have huge snowstorms, though i guess there can be the occasional blizzard but that is more rare than just a little snow here and there. i think that if you can deal with the cold, then you're set.

Ann Arbor is not that snowy. Western Michigan and Western NY are far snowier than the Detroit area. I'd say Ann Arbor's winters are longer and slightly colder the NYC, but if you can deal with NYC winters, Ann Arbor shouldn't be too much of a change.

Ok, I live in NY, except an hour away from NYC. I just got accepted to Michigan yesterday and am planning on attending. I'm not worried about the school at all...just the weather. Glad to know its not THAT bad. It all depends on the warm clothes you buy, I guess!

Since I live about 20 minutes from Ann Arbor, I can give a pretty detailed description of the weather. Some years are milder than others, this year has been pretty mild except for last week when it was in the negatives and and the windchill was about -20. It usually snows a bit, but huge snowstorms are not all that common. The last few years, snow hasn't accumulated all that much, usually less than 6 inches. You can get away with a good Jacket to keep you warm.

Last week I was walking from the library around midnight and I saw a thermometer that read -8 degrees F. Now that's damn cold.

It does seem to be getting more mild though. I'm only wearing 3 layers now haha

I'm sort of scared since I live in the deep south. I think the coldest temperature I have ever experienced was 9 degrees above zero at the bus stop one morning in middle school. It's usually 30-50 degrees all winter, and yesterday it was 60. Any southern transplants to Michigan have comments on getting used to the weather?

The coldest weather I experienced before Michigan was well above freezing. I grew up in the southern bit of the Middle East. Summer temps soar to over 120 degrees with close to 100% humidity. Winter temps range between 50 degrees on a cold night to 90 degrees on a warm winter's day. I had no trouble adjusting to the cold. One never really "gets used" to the cold, but the adjustment is not that big a deal.

crap...i live in CA where its generally shorts and t shirt year round

There's supposedly a storm in AA tonight. I just got off the phone with a friend of mine walking through it.

AA's just cold, I don't recall there ever being that much snow there (compared to like where I went to HS where we get 1-2ft of lake effect snow every year at least).

I'm hoping for no school tomorrow... it was supposed to snow 8 inches but it passed south of us. There is still 25 MPH+ wind and some snow, so I could get lucky. I definately wouldn't want to go outside right now.

I hope we get a snow day tomorrow...but somehow i feel this may be rare.

My friend was talking about how Michigan got sued once for a snow day and that's why there hasn't been any (supposedly)... Is there any truth in that?

I want to say not...

yes, that is true. we are not allowed to have snow days because one law student sued the school a while back.

but there is hope! your individual prof's could cancel class. ya never know.. but the university won't close down.

That's just a rumor. It supposedly happened in the 70s. But if it really happened, it was a wise move on the part of the University. Afterall, Michigan Law school was ranked #2 in the nation back then! LOL!!!

I wasn't talking about a snow day at Michigan, I was talking about my high school, which is about 20 minutes from Michigan's campus.
