Annapolis the movie

www.touchstonepictures.com click on the annapolis trailer.

Looks a lot like an Officer and a Gentleman. We'll probably have to see it, but wish we didn't. Rumor is that they wouldn't let them film at Bancroft because their script was so far from reality.

I watched the trailor. Anyone even slightly familiar with the service academies will get a good laugh at this one. I liked the line that says "50,000 applicants tried to get entrance to the Naval Academy, only 12XX were accepted"!!!
uh huh.

I talked w/a group of Mids earlier this week after the trailer came out -- they couldn't stop laughing at how ridiculously wrong the Academy experience was portrayed. Their best comment was wishing it came out before the holidays (instead of in January) 'cause they figured anyone who believed that's what they were really going through would be more generous with gifts! :) I'll be sure to watch it at the mall in Annapolis on a Saturday afternoon when the Mids are there just to hear them laughing!

hah im sure the west point cadets will get a kick out of the line "this is the toughest service academy in the nation."

well, have to confess, I will probably go and sneak a peek! with or without the torpeodo!

haha that movie is pretty ridiculous but at least spring break should be fun.

Movie trailer is a hoot.

On the up side, the movie appears to have a positive tone to it regarding the quest for leadership at the academy.

Thought the lead actor, James Franco, looked a little "mature" for being right out of high school. Turns out his birthday is 4/19/1978 meaning he is 27 years old - too old for admission to the academy.

Oh well, if you're willing to accept that Annapolis is "the toughest service academy in the nation", you'll probably be able to believe almost anything.

now, now aspen....lets not start one-upping who's the toughest of the bunch....lets face it, they're all tough! Gotta give these kids credit for even attempting this endeavor- no matter if on the Hudson, the Thames, the LI sound or the Severn River...and lets not forget those altitude guys out in Colorado.....

Who knows- maybe somewhere it might spark an interest out there- even with a little literacy license!

Anyone think this movie will have any impact on applications?

who knows? has not even been released yet! But a lot of interest was apparently generated after "Top Gun" came out....time will tell.....

That movie looks ridiculously amazing...I am so psyched...I'm going to see it the minute it comes out at theaters! Yeah...thats right. I love the Naval Academy. Class of 2010 hoorah GO NAVY BEAT ARMY :)

Funny...I don't remember random ships exploding or tackling firsties over my plebe summer...or even meeting cadre in bars for that matter

I particularly like the "most of you won't make". It may be taken out of context but in the trailer at least, they are implying that more than 1/2 of the plebe class doesn't make it. Totally rediculous... Did USNA cooperate with the shooting? Do they have any clauses to limit outright misrepresentation or even lies?

I feel sorry for the BGO's this spring...would like to see data on how many say in their interview "I saw the movie" as their answer to "why do you want to attend the Naval Academy?"....

The academy of course did not cooperate, but for different reasons. Besides the fact that it's rediclous, the movie includes a firstie female fraternizing with a plebe. This highly looked down upon and against the rules. For this reason, the movie was mostly shot in Philly, which is why all the scenes look nothing like the USNA grounds. I have to admit though, being a plebe, this movie definitely gave us all a huge ego boost. People come up to us and say, "Wo, was it really that tough?" and we just respond "....Nah, it was so much tougher", as we laugh to ourselves.

I will be applying for the summer seminar in February for the class of 2011. Sinse the movie comes out in January, all of the 'fake' wannabe-midshipmen who were mesmerized by the Annapolis movie will be flooding the summer seminar in February and ultimetly the overall applications to get in. As hard as it is to get into the academy originally, I will have to compete against all these 'fakes.' Why does Annapolis the movie have to come out now? Even though the Academy does not approve of it, it seems like a cry for help to attract future applicants because no one wants to apply any more! The USNA has been around sinse 1845! Someone must not like me to release it on the single worst year out of 161 years, the year I will start my application process!

rockorblowup

Learn to focus. Whether you get in has everything to do with YOU, no one else.

rockorblowup: I agree with shogun. Calm down. The Academies applications were down last year - that is, back to the "normal" levels from before 9.11.05. Would you be complaining if you were applying just after 9.11.05 when applications skyrocketed? The movie will probably boost all of the Academy applications - applicants will be attracted to the program depicted in the movie, do a little research, and realize that West Point is where you go to learn leadership. So you won't have a problem at USNA. I also doubt they'll show the air-conditioned rooms at Annapolis.

rockorblowup, when you get in, you'll feel better about yourself. but i know how you feel. and besides, remember, those applicants have to go through the process of finding a BGO and their interviews. and that metric ton of paperwork doesn't help either. so it's basically all about deep commitment, something a single movie won't give you.
