Annual "Space Still Available" list

[quote]
At least 210 colleges and universities still have space available for qualified freshman and/or transfer students and all have financial aid to offer, according to the results of the National Association for College Admission Counseling’s annual Space Availability Survey: Openings for Qualified Students.

NACAC Homepage

Is anyone else having problems opening this link? I tried several hours ago and just tried again, both times using my iPad.

I think the site must be down. The link worked earlier, and now it doesn’t, and neither do the links on Google. Perhaps the rush from Adad’s posting crashed the site.

Looks like the site has crashed. I posted it on the Penn State forum for someone dealing with a “late decision” and it’s not linking up…

Site and list are back up, at least for the moment!

I did a summer internship at Batavia Labs way back, and I stayed at Elmhurst College in IL, and I still yearn for that school. I never attended class there but the campus was small and beautiful, and the town was as sweet as could be.

Thanks for that list link.

so what does everyone take away from this list? There are big schools and small, private and public, expensive and inexpensive.

I’d have to look at prior years lists, but are the same schools on the list year after year? Or is it safe to assume that if a school is on this list, they will adjust next year’s admission criteria to try to increase yield?

If you were a student who actually didn’t get in to any of the schools you applied to, theoretically you could apply to these schools now, and if you meet their criteria, are likely to get in?

Just interested in everyone’s interpretation of what this list means.

I think this data is pretty ambiguous. For the schools that list only limited financial aid ability, I can see a couple of possible interpretations. The more negative of the two is that they are overpriced for the market, given that they are having trouble finding students who are both willing and able to pay list price. The other possible interpretation is that they have not fallen very short (and they have met their diversity, high achiever, and special talent goals), but that they are willing to make room for some full pay students because they can use the money. To figure out which interpretation is correct, we’d need data that the list does not provide, like how many open spaces they have.

For the schools that show financial aid as available, I think the outlook is worse, as they seem to be having trouble selling their product, even at a discount. Now the problem may be that they are not making the best use of their financial aid resources (they may not have offered enough aid to make the school affordable or competitive to the students they admitted), but you would think that they would have already tried to sweeten the pot for some if their numbers were looking bad. That they are still sitting on unspent aid money is concerning.

Of course all of the above assumes that a school must be running at capacity to be viable, which is a big assumption.

Not surprising to see just a smattering of CA schools, but was surprised to see some pretty good schools on the list

I think at this point in the process, things are personal. I’d pick up the phone and call.

I think the reasons are pretty obvious.

Let’s just say, for myself, I see no real surprises on that list except for maybe one or two exceptions.

The Apple Newton, Sony Betamax and Ford Edsel were not successful either.

I think part of the issue is that, now, kids apply to 10, 20, or even more schools. It’s not just those aiming for the lottery schools. It’s the Common App and people looking for need aid and merit aid. Colleges must have a very hard time getting the right number of kids to enroll. I expect more of a skew in ED versus regular for privates going forward. Check out the St. Mary’s thread and the Selling Out the Poor thread. It’s all related.

Personally, I think there are more than a few surprises. Beloit, Clarke, Eckerd, Evergreen, Juniata, Lewis and Clark, Loyola Marymount, New College of Florida, Valparaiso and Westminster are all small enough and respected enough that their not filling is a pretty significant sign, IMHO.

^ I’d add Knox College (IL) to eyemgh’s list; US News ranks it as the #75 national LAC, in the same ballpark with Lewis & Clark (#70). Also Augustana College (IL), at #96; Lake Forest College (IL), tied with Juniata for the #100 LAC spot in USN; and Albion College (MI), at #112.

All which is to say that the canary that just flew down the coal mine, might not be coming back.

^^^^
Maybe, but for all we know, these institutions have been on this list for many years previously.

I don’t know. I’ve seen schools on this list that did not show up in the next few years, so I would not say that it is a death knell. I would not want to be an admissions officer any day, but these days with all of the phantom apps that come flying in, I would particularly be jumpy. Fewer kids out there, and more apps due to the common app and kids applying to more schools on average. Each kid can only go to one.

We were discussing this on a thread on this forum regarding St Mary’s of MD which also made the list this year. Other schools that I noted are Albright and Stetson.

^^^^^
skrlvr—I copied this year’s list into excel so that I can compare it to next year’s. (I need a real hobby.) I recall seeing one school on the list last year that does not appear on this year’s list but I never thought to copy last year’s list, thinking it would be accessible still.

I don’t remember what was on last year’s list. But there are some flagship schools that are on this list that surprised me. Both Arizona flagships, U of K, Uof M, UFl, U of Kansas, Idaho schools, Iowa schools. Also Drexel, Embry Riddle, Eugene Lang, Hofstra, Kettering, A whole lot of St Joes, Lawrence, some Sunys and the usual cadre of Catholic schools, including U of SF, Sienna, Loyola of NO, . Kettering, Eckerd, Lawrence are surprises to me.
