Annual "Space Still Available" list

Mirabile–you are good! Thank you very much.

And on an old thread of CC, from 2008, there were similar schools–Lake Forest, St. Joe U, Susquehanna, Eckerd.

A more optimistic note may be found in these numbers:

414 Schools with space available at this time last year
288 Schools with space available this year

Perhaps the schools that have moved themselves off of the list have made the needed adjustments.

We also don’t know how many of these schools are facing big shortfalls in enrollment and tuition revenue, and how many are on this list because they’re fishing for a few last higher-stats kids to firm up their SAT/ACT medians. There are always some applicants who aim too high with their applications and end up disappointed. Some of them could still fall to some of the better schools listed here, but obviously won’t if the schools aren’t open to receiving late applications.

An updated version on June 26, 2012 had 446 schools listed.

Many, though certainly not all, state flagships have rolling admissions with final deadlines even into the late spring/summer so they technically still have space available. Scholarship and financial aid priority deadlines are generally much earlier.

I know that the University of Florida has a different process for admission of transfer students so they are still processing some applications.

Then again, there could also just be a certain amount of statistical noise here, reflecting which colleges overestimated their yield in any given year. There’s certainly a good deal of overlap in the 2012 and 2013 lists, including such notables and semi-notables as: Albion, Arizona State, Augustana (IL), Embry-Riddle, Juniata, Knox, Michigan Tech, Mills, Mount St. Mary’s, Polytechnic Institute of NYU, Rider, University of Florida, University of Kansas, and Valparaiso.

But there were quite a few notable and semi-notable schools on the 2012 list that aren’t on this year’s list, including: Centre College, Chapman, Drew, Gonzaga, Guilford, Hope, Kalamazoo College, LSU, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Seton Hall, Smith, St. John’s U, U of Oklahoma, Truman State, University of Puget Sound, University of San Diego, Ursinus, Villanova, and Wheaton.

And there were some notable and semi-notable schools new to the 2013 list that weren’t on the 2012 list, including: Beloit, Boise State, Cleveland State, Colorado Stat, Drexel, Eugene Lang, Fairleigh Dickinson, High Point University, Illinois Institute of Technology, Illinois State, Kettering, Lake Forest, Lewis & Clark, Loyola Marymount, Marquette, Missouri University of Science & Technology, Montana State, Saint Louis University, SUNY Oswego.

Based on these lists, I wouldn’t jump to any conclusions at all. I’d need to see longer trend lines.

Some schools might just not want to admit to having space.

Those flagship schools … AZ … Kansas … Iowa … all have Admit rates Close to 100 %.
So that is why I am not surprised at all.

I am not saying if those schools are good or bad.

I’m just saying they are obviously having a hard time getting fannies into seats.

I’m just saying that they are obviously having a hard time getting fannies into seats.

I’m surprised SUNY Oswego is on the list. We just toured there on May 4th with my daughter who is a junior. The admissions officer told the group that there were only a few spots left for the class of 2017. We were there on a Saturday and he was warning the seniors that were there for the tour that if they waited until Monday to put it their deposit, it was likely that they would not get a spot.

yes and no, some of those state schools, as someone said, will accept right up until fall for the right kid that comes along. They will take as many kids as they desire and have room…even it it means triples…and infrastructure. They are on the list year after year after year. It’s the smaller ones that miss their targets that are the most interesting.

momofthreeboys, I agree wholeheartedly. The bigs, having attended one, don’t phase me at all. For them and for the state missions they serve, more (right or wrong) is always better. The small ones, particularly the ones of some note, are significant data points.

eyemgh-

I don’t think it’s a problem if a small, relatively selective school lands on this list every so often. It is very difficult to estimate yield accurately, and the smaller the school the greater the odds of the estimate being off. I teach at a selective HS that usually gets it right, but we found ourselves over-enrolled by 25% one year (it was a problem - our classrooms can’t fit that many kids). If, however, one of those schools finds itself short of enrollees year after year, something is wrong. It may cost too much. It may be targeting the wrong students. It may not have competitive facilities. Who knows. I would expect that a competent administration would diagnose and address the problem.

MirabileDictu, I wasn’t looking at any individual schools as a sign they are in trouble per se. What was striking was the number of them who are held in reasonably high esteem who “got it wrong.”

It amazes me that schools ever “get it right.” Do most colleges use wait lists? I’d be curious to know how many that have wait lists are in this group.

To make matters worse, schools now have to figure melt rate. Melt is when a student pays deposits at more than one institution and then just forfeits it when they don’t show in the fall. It’s certainly unethical, but it isn’t illegal. Deposits should be tracked like ED admissions. If a student sends in more than one, they should automatically have all their acceptances rescinded.

Well, not exactly. “Melt” can also occur when the student is accepted at school A and waitlisted at school B, pays the deposit at school A, then is accepted off the waitlist at school B after the normal deadline for acceptance of school A’s offer of admission. I don’t see anything unethical about that student’s acceptance of an offer for admission off school B’s waitlist. Neither do most colleges and universities, because they themselves use waitlists, and are both beneficiaries and victims of the practice. That’s why most of them set their own admissions deposits at a more or less token level, and don’t insist on stiffer penalties for “melt” than forfeiture of that modest deposit.

When I reviewed the NACAC list, I was interested in the “transfer students” column stats. Is it even feasible to apply this late for a transfer spot for next fall?
