Hello. I am a sophomore, class of 2009 dreaming of going to the AFA.

I don’t think I am looking to great right now…here is what I could put on an application:

3.9 GPA - Computers experts - Varsity Tennis player - FBLA member - Eagle Scout - Model UN participant - taking full rack of honors courses for my school…will be doing 2-4 AP courses - physically fit - Speech and Debate team participant…

That is all I can think of…

Well am I on the right path?

Another question…I am thinking of going to a career center to take Information Technology course because I love that stuff and my school doesn’t offers that…how do you think it looks on an application with certification in Information Technology?

I didn't take the PSATS..I wish I had..I will take them if they them again..and I will prepare for SAT/ACT...maybe get some SAT daily questions thing..I believe I heard of that.

What first got my attention to the academy is the ability after graduating to have a oppurtunity to fly the most powerful weapons in the world, while serving for the greatest nation on earth. However I love the thought of the constant compeition and comradery that I know awaits me at the academy. I know that once I graduate I will be one of a distinct group of people who can say that they take pride in who they are and their decision to defend their country. Not to mention it offers one of the premier post-highschool educations in the nation. On top of that one gets "paid" to go there. How can you beat it? :)

P.S. I've never been in CAPs either(so no influence on me)

I have been in CAP for about six years now and I would say that it has greatly affected my decision to go to the USAFA. The experiences I gained in CAP have motivated me to serve our country and live a life in Air Force Blues.

If your dad/mom served more than 8 years on active duty, then you have an instant, "just add water" type nomination (Presidential). You can also apply for nominations from senators and congressmen, just like everyone else. I'd encourage you to do both. For example, I have a presidential nomination, and a nomination from Senator Chambliss of Georgia.

I hope someone can answer this question. All the information I have found from official sources says there are only 100 presidential nominations to each academy each year. Yet I keep running into children of active or retired military who claim their presidential nomination is already granted. I am not disputing zman "If your dad/mom served more than 8 years on active duty, then you have an instant, "just add water" type nomination (Presidential).", but I would really like to know what's going on about presidential nominations. A hundred of them can't be enough to just take it for granted. Surely that's not enough to meet the requests of everyone who asks for one. What's going on, please?

My son has a Presidential it has been on the website since July. It is the same process that the academy choses who get the appointment from these nominations.

A congressman sends 10 names for one slot. The difference is there are 100 Presidential slots and some years there are 400 other years 550 more with a presidential nominations.

My son's ALO has told him not to rely on that nomination and to pursue all possible nominations and he has received one from our congressman and one from our senator. I know that it is very competitive.

I've been slacking a bit guys I come home and don't feel like doing my homework..although I have good grades from first quarter..my second quarter has been slacking. I have about 4 A's 2 B's 1 C this quarter.

How important is individual quarter grades? Does it matter like I have a C this quarter in that class. (I did make an A first quarter)

Only your final grades matter. If you get a B, B+, A, A, on your transcript you get an A, the B and B+ doesn't affect your final GPA. Don't sweat it. If you get A's the next 2 quarters in the class with a C you may be able to talk your teacher into changing the grade.

Yes gglock is right, but don't forget that it's going to be incredibly hard to get a C to an A. I'm struggling to get a 92.5 to a 94 for the A, and that's only 1.5%; let alone 20%. Stupid English teacher is ruining my all A's, whatever...

Well with my "C"..I have about a 93 first quarter...75 or so this quarter..and my semi-finals are to be decided very soon.

If I work my ass off in the sem-finals, 3rd quarter, 4th quarter, finals for this class do you think that C I got in the 2nd quarter won't be noticed to much?

Yah, but what really annoys me is when kids take easy classes and they have 4.0s; I work my butt of in AP classes and testing ahead and I have a 3.9. Well guess who has the higher rank, the 4.0 kids...

It's really rediculous.

I'm ranked at like 30 or so/344 even though I should be within the top 15, it really annoys me. Oh well, everyone's grades are starting to drop this year so my rank will shoot up by 15 or so. 3 kids I know have 3.92s and they are all getting C's in their AP classes and B's in Chem and Pre-calc, dropping their GPAs like to 3.8 or so. Guess what, my rank is going up, hahaha.

If I had to guess my rank will be around 20/330, that's just a prediction though. We'll see in another week...
