Hi,
I know these are annoying, but I need honest feedback from people who are unbiased preferably.
Stats:
790 M 700 EBRW
SAT IIs: 750 Math II, 720 Chemistry
GPA: 4.3734
Rank: 9/364
12 APs taken by the end of this year ( four 4s and one 5)
Subjective:
ECs: intern for a global company, Debate captain, summers spent enriching my learning
Essays: Show “me” to the best of my ability, lots of anecdotes and attention getters
Interview: Decent, I connected with my interviewer some and was honest in my answers
Like anyone that hasn’t cured cancer and doesn’t have a perfect GPA and SAT, not good.
@IN4655 I know these are annoying and answers are repeated, but please take this seriously.
@KG5APR I am taking this seriously. Will be taking 9th in your class and having a 1490 SAT take you out of the running? No, but I see nothing here that says that your a “shoe-in” for MIT and a simple gloss over an applicants application such as that provided here gives the readers no real way of knowing if you have any shot or not. You would definitely have a better shot if you improved your SAT. I don’t know if you listed all your EC’s or not, at first glance your EC’s look pretty weak but depending on how involved you were within those EC’s they may not be that weak and could even be a strength.
@IN4655 Thank you for your honest feedback that really helps! I am involved in both and I did not want to list all my summer stuff and all my ECs.
These are sources my conclusions/responses were based upon; also these two websites will help you if you have more questions:

CDS: http://web.mit.edu/ir/cds/2016/c.html
I encourage you to check C7 of CDS.
790 M 700 EBRW
// I’m not sure what you mean by EBRW, but if 790+700 = 1490 is your SAT score, then it’s very low.
SAT IIs: 750 Math II, 720 Chemistry
// SAT 2 scores are very low as well for MIT.
GPA: 4.3734
// MIT doesn’t publish high school GPA, but based on its difficulty, your GPA seems to be on average.
Rank: 9/364
// 97.5th Percentile seems OK/above average
12 APs taken by the end of this year ( four 4s and one 5)
// OK
Subjective:
ECs: intern for a global company, Debate captain, summers spent enriching my learning
//Internship is separate and should go into work experience. Your ECs are very poor. Also your work experience doesn’t look special.
Essays: Show “me” to the best of my ability, lots of anecdotes and attention getters
// I’ll just assume you wrote a fantastic essay.
Interview: Decent, I connected with my interviewer some and was honest in my answers
// I’ll just assume you had a fantastic interview
Conclusion:
You stand very poor chance at MIT, when MIT already is a reach school for everyone. Especially, your SAT I and SAT IIs are very poor; your ECs are also very poor. I don’t think you will get in, unfortunately.
@HardOREasy Thanks for your input! I understand that my scores are on the lower end for MIT, but my SAT is 99 percentile. Please keep in mind that while these scores are a little low for MIT, they are great scores overall What makes my ECs weak? Can you please elaborate?
Thanks,
KG5APR
@KG5APR I’m fairly certain a 1490 on the SAT is not 99th percentile. My 1540 was almost the cutoff of the 99th percentile. @HardOREasy EBRW - Evidence Based Reading and Writing.
@KG5APR What makes your EC’s weak are that they are limited. Again, you did say you did not list all of your EC’s, so neither me or @HardOREasy can say how strong or weak your EC’s are not knowing what all of them are, your time commitment to all of them, and any accomplishments you may have had with your EC’s. If you really want to get into top 10-20 colleges I think the easiest thing that you can do is study really hard on the SAT EBRW. Study it like your going for an 800 on each so that any question that you miss you commit yourself to figuring out why and fixing that mistake.
“Please keep in mind that while these scores are a little low for MIT, they are great scores overall”
Your chance thread is for MIT. Who cares about how your scores are overall
MIT’s 2015-2016 common data set says 25th percentile has a 2120 SAT. A 1490 is about 2120-2150. So you’re in the bottom 25th percentile, hence most posters here saying you have a low chance.
Math SAT and chemistry also very low for MIT. There’s really no way to tell you you have even the national average 7.9% chance if you don’t tell us what ECs you have.
This thread is super toxic. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/massachusetts-institute-technology/939227-reminder-no-one-not-even-me-can-give-you-an-accurate-chance-at-mit-p1.html
Here is good advice, and you won’t find a more credible source.
@ManaManaWegi Thank you for that! The link was very helpful!
came here to post that, tyvm for beating me
I know it was dumb to post a chance thread because no one can tell me what my chances are and people choose to be rude behind a screen. I just hope MIT is not this cutthroat…if it is I would not go even if I was accepted.
nvm
I got rejected…you all were mean but correct
KG5APR: Nobody here was trying to be mean to you. You asked what were your chances and you got responses. There are many people who would probably do quite well that get rejected by MIT. Just not enough spots for all of them. So, MIT is looking for students who REALLY stand out. You sound like you’ve done well but either you could have done better or you didn’t “package” yourself correctly. After all, it is to a great extent the “written you” that is either accepted or rejected by MIT.
Go to another great school, do well there and you’ll be successful in life; which is the ultimate goal.
Life’s ultimate goal is to be happy which can be very different from being successful…
^ I think HPuck was using a broad definition of “successful.” If you’re happy, that sounds pretty successful to me. Doesn’t have to be only success at school or whatever.
Right, I was using the broad definition of successful, which would also include “happy”. For me, if I am not successful at something I care about, I’m not happy. And again, there are many shades of “successful”.
For example: My icon is actually a picture of me playing goal in ice hockey. If I have a good night, i.e. successful, then I’m in a good mood. Play poorly (i.e. unsuccessful) and I will not be such a happy camper. However, I’ll still enjoy that post game liquid refreshment in the locker room with my teammates and have a smile on my face because just being in the game is a success story in itself…
Anyways, there are lots of good colleges out there where the OP can get a good engineering education and be successful, happy, feel loved and appreciated and have a wonderful life.
