Another Asian parent rant.

Sorry guys, I know there are hundreds of other threads about Asian parents but my mom is driving me absolutely insane.

First of all, I'm a junior and she won't let me get my driver's license because I'm too "young"
She's making me wait until I'm 18 and won't let me practice in her car.
So when I take the driving test, I will automatically fail because I have never been in the driver's seat of a car. Nice -__-

This makes me so angry but I am most outrage about how's she dictating my college choices.

She will not allow me to go out of state. She'd rather I go to a community college than out of state. Okay, I can live with that. Besides, the college I want to go to, Tufts, is in state. Next she said I cannot live on campus. Tufts is about an hour a way from my house. She expects me to commute every single day back and forth. I mean yeah, it'll be fun like the first day but eventually I can imagine it to be very time consuming and annoying. I'll die living at home because my family members are constantly on my ass. So pretty much dorms are a no-no. If I wanted to stay in the Boston area, she said she'll rent an apartment and I have to move in with her. But seriously, I'm going to be 18 years old, a legal adult, capable of making my own decisions. The whole point of going to college is being independent and leaving this boring dump. So to my fellow CCers, how did your parents feel about you moving out? Did you have to do any convincing?

My dad told me he didn’t want me looking at any colleges within a two hour drive since he didn’t want me coming home on weekends.

Probably had something to do with him living at home and having to commute via public transportation 90 minutes each way when he was in college.

My Asian parents are regularly berating me. When I turned 15 and a half, they wanted me to immediately apply for a Driver’s Permit. They’re still constantly nagging me to go to driving school, but I don’t really feel the need. It’s not like I’ll have anywhere to drive.

My Asian parents don’t care. If I stay in town they’ll be happy because that eliminates dorm fees. But they’re perfectly fine letting me go live on the other side of the country.

I’m not sure what I’m doing yet, but it’s nice to have the independence.

That is kind of selffish of your mom. You’ll turn 18 and you don’t need to do what the hell she says. So just wait it out. If you want to go to Tufts and live on campus you don’t need her permission or blessings to do so. Why would she want you to stay at home? To take care of her old ass?

are you an idiot? how do you expect him to pay for staying on campus? while it is selfish of her, there’s no clear way to resolve his problem.

Um klebian first of all she wouldn’t have to pay much for dorms because she works at Tufts medical center and I get a 50% discount off EVERYTHING. She’d only have to pay about as much as state college.

idk, having lived with asian parents all my life i can kinda empathize w/ pinkstarcloud (who i’m guessing is a girl btw. lol) its pretty difficult to just defy your parents and move away if they want you to stay close…youve been taught all your life to obey them and yea, they ARE the ones paying (in my case at least). so it sucks :(

Holy fųcking cow…you’re me!

I, too, had to wait till 18 to get a driver’s license.

I, too, wasn’t allowed to go out of state.

I, too, had to go to a CC (for financial reasons rather than academic reasons).

I, too, cannot live on campus.

I, too, will have to commute (though admittedly, my commute won’t be as long).

…crazy. Maybe your mom in Massachusetts is a clone of my mom in California…

Damn Asian moms. Guys, do the world a favor and don’t reproduce with an Asian girl.

[/I kid]

Most state schools are still pretty pricy if your parents aren’t willing to pony up any money for the bill.

I have to say I’m 1000 percent with you on this one–your mom is out of control!

Pinkstarcloud and yawn

THERES A THIRD CLONE OF YOUR MOTHERS.

She’s in Minnesota, and somewhat annoyingly, she’s my mom. She was going to make me wait until 18 to get my drivers license but I had to drive to the bus station for dual enrollment at my state college so I got it at 17 instead. I can only go to one college, University of Minnesota (even though I had both the drive and the stats to go to other places). I can’t stay in dorms, my commute is around 1.5 hours each way. I also have a 9:30 PM curfew.

ARGFHHHHH ■■■!!! And FYLs too because I sympathize.

Really? My parents would kill me if I went to community college.

^
okay I admit that’s a bit far fetched, she’d kill me too but apparently to her, it’s better than leaving state. And wow I didn’t know my mom had clones, I thought I was alone on this XD. Well I’m planning to do pharmacy in college so I hope the job will help pay off the debt.

My Asian parents couldn’t care less about my grades or where I go for college. They just want me to be happy ^^

wow…
now I feel lucky…
althrough my mom control me to not party, not arrive late to home and not having gf, she wanted me to go far away for college as long as it is a good college…
not all asian moms are equal…

Do you have brothers/sisters?

Sorry to burst the “Asian” bubble, but I’ve seen plenty of Holly parents demand the same things. parents are parents.

also, the schools my parents would let me go to out of state would be schools like UNC,Duke,IVy’s,ND,etc. Which sucks because my stats are average.

I’m an only child, I guess that explains a lot. At koreanboi, my stats are average too but I’m pretty sure there are other great universities that will accept you. I’m staying optimistic : )

Okay, I’m not average on CC(3.8+,2000/30+) but also not true average(2.0,1500/21), but more like in the middle.

Wish me luck when I apply for Cal Poly Slo in the fall.
