what are my chances...should i even spend my time applying to either RSI?

hey, I am going to be a junior right now, and I am thinking about applying to RSI next year. . .
my classes aren't as good as yours - btw did you find the college classes useful? I will probably run out of AP classes by my senior year. . .

anyways, I had a friend who went to RSI, and she was pretty amazing, but not extremely brilliant:
she had a 1600 SAT
she was on the board of many clubs
she was an ISEF finalist her freshman year
she did really well in speech and debate (the application says that this is very important)
I don't think she had too many math distinctious, though. . .
she had very good relations with teachers, so I am pretty sure she got amazing recommendation letters

I hope this helps. . .I would like to get some advice at RSI too

The funny thing is is that I remember that StaticSoliloquy said that almost everyone who got into RSI didn't know about it till the week before or something. People who planned it out for years didn't get in. Or something like that.

I just found out about it in March/April, and wasn't even considering applying until a week or so ago. Does that put me in the "planning for years" or "didn't find out about it till the week before" category?

ISEF is Intel Science & Engineering Fair, so I wouldn't say that fewfd's friend wasn't brilliant.

trance, you said you're a math guy, so give us some more info about your math competitions!

For things like RSI, you don't know until you try. Last year we submitted a team Siemens project without expecting even Semifinalists, yet we ended up being Regional Finalists!

i took the amc 12s in 9th and i scored somewhere in the 90s. I missed the registering date last year. Im planning to take it this year though...i could score a lot higher. Im actually just starting to learn the merits of the test now (on the cc forums). I think it would be too late to use the scores for rsi however...i think we take the amcs in feb and the rsi deadline is feb 1st (my birthday haha)...i could be mistaken

i am relatively new to math competitions in general.

My friend had 800M 790V, is pretty active, and went to USAMO as a sophomore, and he got in for math. Interestingly, I don't think he was the top math guy in the state. They must've liked his personality or something.

If I knew about things like RSI earlier (like in middle school), I wouldn't have been this lazy and actually tried to do well in competitions. . .now I regret watching TV and stuff. . .

sniff That's exactly how I felt, except my problem was the PSAT.
