another Chance me thread :)

Hey guys, I'll get right to the point. I love UNC and want to know how I stand in the oos pool. Thanks a ton to those who reply!
ACT: 33... :(
SAT: 2270 superscored (780M, 790W, 700CR), 2240 single sitting (750M, 790W, 700CR)
SAT 2: 780 Bio, 740 Math 2 (should I retake?)
GPA: 4.29
Course load: AP Calc BC, AP English, AP Chem, AP stats, AP Psych, AP Human Geo
Total APs: 10
Rank: hmm... probably top 5 after this semester.
ECs: Not too bad. No sports, just a bunch of volunteering and side things (i.e. self teaching myself Arabic, creating Cricket club at school, Tutoring, etc)
Letters of Rec: Excellent!
Essays: I think they are good... 8/10 Common app and 7.5/10 UNC (10 being amazing and 0 being pathetic lol)
Yup, how do I stand as an oos applicant? Thanks!!!

Even being an OOS student, I think you stand a decent shot at getting into Carolina. If you take a look at the link below, you’ll be able to view the profile for UNC’s fall 2011 incoming freshman class.

Looking at this, your SAT scores definitely fall within the range that UNC admitted last year. UNC holds a bit higher standards for OOS students that IS students, but in terms of SAT scores, I think you’re pretty solid.
Your AP courseload will definitely be of benefit to you, especially being an OOS. You are somewhat vague about your EC’s, which definitely hold some weight in the admissions process at UNC. Also, UNC is very big on essays. I’ve talked personally with the director of undergraduate admissions during a few campus visits, and I was told that essays are definitely a large part of your application. Make sure your essays are as good as you can get them, because they definitely take those into account.
Overall, I’d say you have a pretty decent shot at getting in. Good luck! :)

Moezy, do you think good essays can make up for weak EC’s? I have average grades and SAT’s. I’m working really hard on the essays though just to see how I’ll do…

I don’t know how much good essays can “make up” for weak EC’s, but strong essays will definitely work in your favor. Remember, each component (the EC’s, grades, SAT scores, essays, ect) is just a small piece of the pie that is factored into an admissions decision, but I’ve been told that strong essays definitely do work in your favor.
