Another chance me thread

There can never be enough :P

In all seriousness, I would really like to go to UF, so here it is:

White, female, income ranges from 60-90k (my dad's in sales, so it varies a lot)
FL resident, junior at public high school

GPA: 3.9 UW, 4.6 W
Rank: not sure, most likely in the top 10 out of >500
SAT: 2100 first time, planning to retake
ACT: not taken yet

AP classes/scores:
AP Human Geo (5)
AP World Hist (5)
AP Psych (5)
Currently taking AP English Comp, AP Calc AB, AP Euro Hist, and AP Biology
Will take 4 or 5 AP classes senior year

Extracurriculars:
Editor & writer for school newspaper (3 yrs)
Tutor for Mu Alpha Theta
Just got into NHS (fingers crossed that I can get a leadership/officer position!)
...that's it, I slacked off the first two years of high school because of a slew of family issues, and now it's too late to join anything worthwhile :/
Community service: 150+ hours at a non-profit sports association

Hook: might be considered a first gen college student. My dad didn't go to college, my mom went briefly but didn't even get an associate degree.
Intended major/minor: unsure; interested in English, Biology, Poli Sci, and Women's Studies

You have a shot (you’re right on par with the incoming class), it just depends on the strength of your application against the other applicants in your year. EC’s is an area I would work on for you. Volunteering/interning is a great thing to do and joining a club or society is always worth it. I would try and find a club and somewhere to volunteer/intern soon. A year and a half is plenty long enough to get something worthwhile out of it! I am not saying go and join fifteen more things, but one or two more would add some weight to your EC’s. UF likes the total package! You have the grades/scores and with a little bit more EC’s and a killer essay, you have just as good of a shot as anyone!

Thanks, that is somewhat reassuring  Yeah, my EC’s are killing me, especially considering UF has a reputation for “randomly” rejecting people with my stats/better because of their EC’s…of course all the stuff that happened to me freshmen/sophomore year is no excuse for not being involved in anything besides the school newspaper those years, but it has really hurt me for college, and idk what I can join now that will really bolster my application. But I’m meeting with my college counselor at school soon, and hopefully we’ll work something out. My heart is pretty much set on UF.

Nothing wrong spending 3 (or 4) years on the student newspaper, thats a great EC. :)

Surrency1992 gave you some great advise. I would also add getting a job as an option. UF would view it as another EC and the extra money helps. It also doesn’t hurt to continue your volunteer work over the summer.

You should view yourself as a first generation college student (which does matter in admissions), since neither of your parents have received a four-year college degree (the most common definition).

Good Luck!

Thank you for the advice! I will be continuing volunteer work in the spring, I might be able to get another 70 hours in by the end of this year or beginning of senior year. I will look into doing something over the summer, idk what. My teacher nominated me for the People to People ambassador thing over the summer but it’s quite pricey so I probably won’t be able to do it.

I started another thread a while ago about EC’s for writers, because writing is my passion, and got some good ideas - would it look good to have submitted some essays to be published online/in magazines or to have won writing contests? Would those types of things hold enough weight on my application to give me a significantly better shot at acceptance, or would they be relatively minor?

You sound like you may want to continue to write in college, even if you’re not an English major. You should try to get essays and stories published and enter some contest. It will help some on the application (especially any awards), but it will also help you land a part time job, such as writing/copy editor/production/etc for the Alligator.
