Another Chance Thread...

Hi everyone,

My husband has a job offer on the east coast and it looks like we’ll be moving over there come fall! It’s always been a dream of mine to live in NYC for a bit and Columbia GS honestly seems like the perfect fit for me. I would be applying for Spring 2018 and would love to hear about my chances.

Backstory: I grew up in a pretty messy household, where I ended up being the caretaker for my younger brothers and mentally ill mom. I stayed in high school, but my GPA was around a 1.6 and I didn’t end up graduating. After high school, I got a job at a grocery store and worked my way up from bagger to managing my own department/starting to implement changes company-wide in just a few years.

At 24, I went back to school and obtained my high school diploma as well as my AA from a local CC. I was also working full-time while attending school full-time and maintained a 4.0 GPA. I was also a member of Phi Theta Kappa and volunteered as often as I could in the arts scene around my home city.

My husband and I ended up moving to LA right after I got my AA for his schooling and, due to family deaths/illnesses and the uncertainty of where my husband’s job prospects might take us after he graduated, I put my education on hold for a bit. In the meantime, I’ve worked my way up at my current job and am now running my own shop and helping with operations in our shops in new markets. I’m now almost 29 and have realized that I am so, so very ready to finish my degree. Oh, and I would be applying as a Psych major.

Any ideas as to my chances of admission?

TL;DR: High school dropout due to taking care of family, 4.0 GPA from CC while working and going to school full-time, PTK, lots of business experience where I worked my way up to leadership positions, Psych major, 1380 on new SAT.

Wow, sounds like a very interesting story… although I suppose most people considering this school have one. Your story sounds similar to many others who have applied to GS and got accepted (and I mean that in the best way possible!) You should definitely apply. I think with a well-written essay explaining everything you just told us on here, you should have a pretty good shot. Don’t worry about your past bad grades too much. I had crappy high school grades and past college grades from years ago, and alas, I will be attending GS in the spring. Sounds like you’ve grown a lot as a person and show the maturity and intelect to succeed at GS. Good luck!

@nygs7792 Thank you so much! And congratulations to you! Hopefully I’ll see you around.

Did you get in?
