Why would we need another chance thread when there's an official one that's stickied already?

Anyway, based on your stats I'd say you stand a very good shot. I say match.

your stats mean nothing until they are legit

i gotta say, with your stats, you are an easy in.
that is unless you totally blow your SATs (get like 1600?)
or get arrested for drug trafficking :P

no offense to the academic reputation of Berkeley (which remains a wonderful institution at which i am currently attending), you really should instead be looking into upper-middle level privates (duke? NW? Cornell? WUSTL? Brown?) because your stats and research can take you much farther than a public university. its just my personal opinion and experience.

but really, 2000+ and 4.8+ at Berkeley, a school that admits almost solely on the basis of stats?
yeah, i think you have a good chance haha.

hahahaha well actually the real reason I am looking into Berekely, and the UC's in general, is the possibility getting a scholarship of some sort.

Does anybody know ways to improve the chances of getting such a scholarship?

lol

scholarships are an entirely different matter. I do not believe the UCs, being cash-strapped as they are currently, will be very generous with scholarship money. Keep in mind that its a public school and maybe like 1% of people come in on non-athletic merit (not including regents/leadership scholarships) scholarships (i dont know the figures but that's the feeling i get). Example: the valedictorian at my HS, who got into Harvard/Yale/Penn/Stanford got zip from Berkeley.

Private schools are much much more generous with scholarships. My stats were very marginal and i got 14k from Cornell (after some haggling :P)

one thing you could do is to play schools off each other i.e. tell them that you got a good offer at another school. If they really want you, they'll match/up the ante. However, make sure you are very diplomatic about the way you go about it and be sure to avoid doing so with schools that are in that one coalition against "purchasing" prospective students from other universities (search online for the list).

but with that said, i do not believe Berkeley will "bargain" for the most part, although they do give out things such as the Regents Scholarship and Leadership awards. Look online to apply.

good luck :)

Thanks. I will look into it.

Yah I kinda lied about these scores. There not mine, but an older friend of mine who has just five minutes ago informed me that he posted some stat's up on CC to see what people would say.

For some reason he insisted that I write that he is 23 and currently attends Berkeley.

I have changed my password, so this shouldn't happen again.
