Another chances/honest opinion thread

Hi guys, I would just like some opinion on my SAT score for BC. I was on collegeboard.com and it didn’t make me feel so good, which can’t really be helped but here it is:

CR: 650
M: 500

Rank: 2
I’ve taken with out a doubt the most rigorous classes for all four years.
Volunteer: summer hospital volunteer, homeless shelter (4hr/wk), tutoring at local middle school, annual elementary school gift drive (coordinator)
EC: Student Council President, Literary Magazine secretary, NHS, Student and School Board Forum (selected representative of school)

Um…do you guys think anyone has gotten into BC with that low of a math score before?

I think it was Reddune...

He got in with a score around 1200.

He's Asian, so I don't know if the race factor played a role in his admission.

I still think it's a huge reach school for you with 1150.

Well, I don't know if I would totally rule it out, since the rest of what you listed is pretty good, especially since you're salutatorian/took the most rigorous course load. Collegeboard lists standardized test scores as "Very important," but it also gives that label to the intensity of one's course load.

Have you taken any APs or other similar standardized tests?

Thank you you two for answering. I was also thinking it was a huge reach for me......

Our school (really embarrassing) only offers three AP classes, World, U.S. and English Literature (each AP class is offered in this order from 10-12 grade) and yes I have taken all three. I am currently taking English, I recieved a 5 on both history exams.

Take it again and take the ACT

BC is known as an "SAT whore" so this doesnt help you, but you have a shot because of your courseload and class rank. About the Asian thing, yes it is pathetic that BC gives AA to the most overrepresented group at just about every school except BC, Asians. Our diversity is really pathetic.

about the race thing, its good to hear. 2. why didn't they have a bigger number of asians/other minorities in the past? did BC not care about diversity then?? 3. they seem to consider religion [seeing that about 80 percent is catholic] right?? not right??

It's just that Asians assume it's a white school. (It is actually white though.)

They imagine that the school would be filled with white guys who pop their collars and proudly displace their Abercrombie clothes. (I think this is true to a point probably.)

I'm Asian. I'm applying. I'm taking advantage of the stereotype.

It's their loss and my gain :D.

I, however, mainly want Boston College because it'll give me a chance to study Catholicism and become one. That's my main priority.

"yes it is pathetic that BC gives AA to the most overrepresented group at just about every school except BC, Asians"
I'm sorry, what the heck does that mean? By what data or public statement from BC did you base this declaration on? Are you implying that Asian doesn't belong at BC ckmets13, and that Asian only got in because of AA and we are taking deserving spots from other AHANA students? Take a look at the real data ckmets13:

FRESHMAN CLASS 1996
AHANA STUDENT POPULATIONS
Black or African American: 5%
Asian American: 9%
Hispanic: 5%
Native American: < 1 %

FRESHMAN CLASS 2005
AHANA STUDENT POPULATIONS
Black or African American: 7%
Asian American: 10%
Hispanic: 8%
Native American: < 1%

Gosh, look at that, over a nine years period, Asian student population increased by over ONE WHOLE PERCENT! We need to have a crackdown immediately, there are too many of those Asians here. Asian is the largest AHANA group at BC by a minute percentage; so AA for Asians? I don’t think so. I think ck here needs to check on real data once in a while instead of wild rumors.

BC is known as an "SAT whore"
I’m sorry, WHAT? My best friend in high school stayed back a year in high school (5 F’s!) had an SAT score of 1150 out of 1600 and was admitted to BC. A fluke? Her parents donated $50 millions perhaps? No, it’s because there are more to her than just her SAT scores and her GPA. The girl got straight A’s for her junior and senior years taking really hard classes, survived some crazy hardships. Each individual applicant brings something unique to the table, not everybody fits into a cookie cutter, because there isn’t one. I won’t deny the fact that BC’s SAT score has rose tremendously over the past 20 years, but correlation doesn’t mean causation. SAT whore? Hmm…perhaps, and just maybe, more students with better record decided to matriculate here because it’s getting better than before. But that is just my crazy theory. Another person who is in the same class as us had higher SAT score than both of us, BC was her top choice, and could easily afford to pay the full tuition, but was turned down. That person is now miserable at NYU and is in the process at transferring to BC. So give BC some credit for picking out students with low SAT score but have other dimensions to offer. Not everything at BC admissions is so bleak as my disillusioned-rumor-monger fellow Eagle likes to paint it to be.

"I think it was Reddune...
He got in with a score around 1200."
My god, someone actually remembers my SAT1 score! That was two years ago. My FIRST SAT1 score was a 1260, and I did retake it. 1260 (640 M, 620 V) was the score I had when I submitted my application, but I would be foolish to stick with that score. I took five SAT 2 subject tests and score 720 or greater on most of them (except for writing) so it helped some what. Plus, I took the SAT 2 Math 2 and scored a 720 so it “excused” my below average first SAT1 math score. It's not an advantageous thing to be an Asian male and has a low SAT score (is that a racist statement? Because God knows we have over-the-top expectation to meet.)

Now back to the OP’s question. I know one student who was the Valedictorian of her class but scored a 1230 on the SAT. Some of us aren’t great test takers. A low test score now doesn’t spell the end for you, because it certainly didn’t spell it for me. Retake the SAT1 again, improve it to the best of your ability, take a few SAT2 tests that fit your interest or specialty (history geek, Latin nerd) to show the depth of your academic ability, and that one single test score doesn’t represent you overall.

Reddune, I wasn't here two years ago :D.

I obsessively looked over all threads on this board at school.

Your stats actually gave me hope as both a Boston College applicant and a Gates Millenium applicant. (I'm not sure about Gates Millenium because you probably had a very unique hook.)

ManUtd20Ole
My unique hook was a very simple one: Loud, Obnoxious, and Sarcastic. You don't find too many Asian males with those characteristics who aren't a douchebag. I'm working as a local rep for GMS now, if you have questions relate to GMS, don't hesitate to PM me. However, don't ask me to proof-read your eight essays. I won't mind doing one or two, but not all eight.

Oooh. Sweet.

Thank you so much.

And I promise I will not bug you with editing!
