Another chances post (prob not top tier)

Hey guys, I'm not really sure where I want to go. I know I want to do some kind of business/finance program, so look at maybe second-tier schools with good business programs/repuations.

I'm a lower-middle class Asian male. I go to a pretty big (2000ish) public school outside of Boston with a pretty good academic repuation. My GPA there is about 7.82 out of 9 (9 is an AP/honors A), or about a 3.8 weighted on a 4.0 scale. I'm not sure where my rank is since my school doesn't rank, but I'm probably top 30-35%.

Next year I'm taking A.P. Physics, A.P. BC Calc, and A.P. Psychology. I'm also taking non-honors English and Economics (school doesn't offer honors/AP Econ). I expect to do very well in those classes, since I'm a Math/Science oriented guy.

My best SAT scores are 570 CR, 790 Math, and 580 Writing, or 1360/1940. I'm gonna retake in October, I think I can move it up a solid 50-100 points total.

SAT IIs, I got 620 Spanish (bleh), and a 740 Math II. I'm not sure what I want to do, if I want to retake the spanish, or take physics and teach it to myself (I want to retake the math and one other in November).

My extracurriculars are OK, mostly sports though. Freshmen football, one year JV, and then I started in varsity this year. I'll also start next year. I've done one year of JV Track and Field (indoor and outdoor) and two years of varsity indoor and outdoor. I made the division meet in shot put this year (level right before all-states) in shot put, and I have a good chance to be in the top ten in shot put indoor and outdoor, and top ten in discus outdoors (both across the whole state). I've gotten some minor letters of interest so far.

I've also been involved in the Asian Culture Club off and on throughout high school. I volunteered with a statewide youth road race program sophomore and junior years, and I'll do it again senior year.

I began working at the YMCA this summer, and I'll keep doing it next year.

Next year I'll also be a coach in a youth basketball league with my friend.

That's about it. Where do you think I can go that has a quality business program (I'm kind of a legacy at Bentley), safeties, matches, reaches?

I'd go for Emory, it would be a bit of a reach but they have an excellent buisness program.

First, Emory has an excellent 2-year business program (Goizueta Business School) that students apply to for admission in their junior year. Based on your academic stats, Emory University would be a reach for you. Your weighted GPA (loosely translated to a 4.0 base) looks to fall beneath the GPA for more than 50% of enrolling freshmen. Your SAT score for CR is at only the 10-12th percentile, again for enrolling freshmen, while your SAT Math score is obviously excellent. You estimated your class rank at between top 30-35%, which means that you are in the top 600-700 students at your school. This compares against 90% of Emory's enrolled freshman class at top 10% of their H.S. graduating class, and 98% who fall within the top 25%. Additional factors weighted significantly include essays, recommendations, academic rigor, and EC's (which appear comparatively weak in your case.) It would seem that you would be well-served to bring up your SAT CR/Writing scores.

Another school, much closer to home for you, is Babson College. It has an outstanding hands-on orientation that would be worthwhile to explore. It may also be a slight REACH for you. Bentley is certainly a good option, especially with your legacy factor. U. of Michigan may be a good option (MATCH) with a good undergrad business program. Bucknell (MATCH) also has a good biz program. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I'm really liking Babson but I would like to look at some more reach colleges if possible. Any more? Thx
