Another Chances Thread, with bonus question!

So..

I'm a senior in high school, here are some stats -

-4.13 GPA weighted, 3.8-something unweighted
-31 ACT w/ Writing (I've only taken it once, and could do better if I studied and retook, but should I?)
-No SAT, planned to take it in November, but can't. I dunno what I'm gonna do for this :[
-AP History and AP Comp as a junior, AP Calc, Lit, and Bio now (I go to a pretty small public school, and that's all the AP they've offered)
-Dual Enrollment in College Algebra and Government this semester, Spanish 2 and Economics next semester
-Drum Major/1st Trumpet in Band (again, small school, I have to do both) for Junior & Senior year, NHS since 9th grade
-I'm a Florida Resident, and have BrightFutures.

That's it. Oh, and I want to be a Pre-Med major, which leads me to the Bonus Question:

I'm applying online (FACTS.org), and when I go to Institution Information and pick my intended major, I click Pre-Med, but it always saves as Pre-Dentistry. Anyone know anything about this, or should I just contact USF? It's the only thing preventing me from submitting my application.

Your stats are more than fine for admission to USF. You might want to try for better test scores to maybe qualify for better scholarship awards. As far as the pre-med/pre-dent deal with the facts.org app, it’s probably just a glitch that is not material–to expedite things I’d just send it in as is unless you’re really concerned about it and prefer to contact USF admissions about it first.

Okay, thanks! Do you know how late USF will take ACT/SAT scores, or what sort of scholarships I’m eligible for now/if I improve scores?

Also, do you know anything about the Pre-Med program at USF (versus, say, the program at UF)? I’m applying to UF as well, but I’m considering USF over it (even despite being a Gator fan) because:

I’ve grown up in a rural area about 30 minutes outside Gainesville, sort of too close to home

The rural area has made me want to go somewhere different, more metropolitan

As far as I can tell, Tampa is awesome

Two of my best friends plan to attend (though I’m trying not to let this influence me too much)

The new medical sciences and dorms I’ve heard their building

I want to go somewhere at which I can have success later on in my education, but also somewhere I can grow as a person, and the best candidate for that seems to be USF to me.

Also, while I’m here, would anybody have any idea about my chances at UF?

I’d try to get any extra tests done by the end of this fall to be competitive for all scholarship award application deadlines that are typically the early part of the new year; meantime your present scores are fine for your application for admission. Some of the scholarships you would be made aware of being awarded with your acceptance notification. Your stats match up with USF’s Honors College; if you are dead set on medicine check out USF’s 7 year program in the honors college. Too, check out joining USF’s Herd of Thunder marching band–they are terrific, if I could play a musical instrument I’d join them myself. You are probably qualified for admission to any of Florida’s colleges, including UF.

Here are some more links with scholarship info for incoming USF freshmen, notice a 32 ACT score can get you more money:

Sharpen your pencil to get your GPA up a little too if you can.

Important USF deadlines for ACT and SAT testing:

Note: The last ACT/SAT test dates that will be used for scholarship consideration are December 11, 2010(ACT) and December 4, 2010(SAT). The February 12, 2011 test date for ACT & SAT is the last date that will be used for admit decisions.

I went to USF on friday and they say that their med program is pretty good like has a good rating .

Cool! Thanks for all the replies!

So basically, though, even if I get a 32+, I still won’t be eligible unless I pull up my GPA a bit? I also don’t know how they calculate it, and what mine would be.

Also, how eligible do you think I’d be for scholarships like Kosove or Jenkins? I think I’d do well for the Kosove one because:

A. Harrison and Ruth Kosove Undergraduate Scholarship - Special Requirements: Demonstrated capacity for leadership. For incoming freshmen, cumulative SAT score of 1232 or higher or a composite ACT score of 26 or higher. In addition to the USF Foundation Scholarship application, applicants must submit a brief statement of long term goals; an essay (no longer than 3 typed pages double-spaced) discussing significant problem(s) confronting American society or the international community of particular concern to the applicant. The essay shall include one or more solutions to the problem. Two letters of recommendation, one of which cannot be from an applicant present or former professor or teacher, must also be submitted.

I was the drum major for two years (major leadership role), have good ACT scores, have excellent people to write recs for me, and write good essays. What do you think?

The Florida resident freshmen strictly merit scholarships you would probably be notified about with your acceptance. I never fully understood exactly how USF figures up the entrance GPAs, I think if you asked 3 different admission officers to figure your GPA out from your high school transcript, you’d probably get 3 different GPAs!

Most other scholarship decisions won’t be made until after FAFSAs are received by USF.
