Another Chances Thread

White Female from northern Illinois...about half of my class is going to a 4-year university and the other half is going to a 2-yr community college.

ACT: 31 (English-29 Math-29 Science-33 Reading-33 Writing-10)

your act score is in their ballpark and so is your gpa. your courseload is weak but u have a good excuse, make sure that is emphasized. as far as your extra curriculars concentrate on leadership. thats really important to duke i think. essays are as well, a great essay can compensate for a weaker courseload (even if its not your fault). also a word of advice, dont mention the who's who thing. other than that your chances are pretty good.

Duke is a reach but your chances aren't bad. the fact that you are barely in the top 10% may hurt though along with alright test scores but your chances aren't bad at all. good luck! :)

thank you for the info!

leaf_vball08, I think you have as good of a chance as anyone else. Just make sure to emphasize where you stand out from the pack (i.e. leadership? special ECs?). Do you have any hooks that would be of interest to Duke?

Do NOT post "Who's Who Among American High School Students" as an award. It might not hurt you, but the admissions committee might laugh at you a bit; and I can say with 100% certainly that it will NOT help you. It's widely seen as a way for the private corporation to make money (people buy the books that their kids are listed in).

Anybody who has a chance of getting in to Duke would easily qualify for "Who's Who" status. Even Hamline University, a small liberal arts school in Minnesota states that "It's honestly something that an admissions officer typically wouldn't consider or wouldn't play into an admissions decision." At Duke, it DEFINITELY will not be looked at as a positive, so there is really no point to say it...
