Another Communit College Question.... headstart?

I'm a highschool senior this year, not completely sure where i'll be attending next year, but after reading through here i'm DEFINITELY considering some of my easier options now.

Anyway, i'll start by saying i'm determined to do whatever it takes to get myself into med school, whrether it be living in my room studying 24x7 or whatever, i'm willing to put in the work.

After readign a lot, i'm well... VERY intimidated by ochem as i'm sure most people are and i really want to make sure I do well in this class. I read a thread about takign OChem at Community college.... however what i'm wondering is what if i were to take OChem at community college over the summer? Not as a means to get credit and be done, but just to get a headstart on the subject. Is there anything wrong with this idea?

I'm not familiar with how transcripts from community colleges works really. Would i have to report that I took the class at community college or would the college i attend somehow find out?

If anyone's done this for OChem or really any of the key classes just to get a headstart over the summer please let me know. Thanks!

That sounds like a good plan, but I'm pretty sure you WILL have to report that to medical schools - any college work is requested on the AMCAS form.

Of course, that might not be a bad thing. It certainly wouldn't be a good one, but it might not be bad either. You simply took it to get a jump on the material; I don't think anybody will begrudge you that. (If you get a bad grade at the CC, of course that will hurt you.)

so... outside of buying the book and trying to teach myself(doesn't sound like a good idea... athough i've pretty much taught myself calc and ap bio from the book this year) does anyone know if there are any other options on getting ahead in the course that don't cost a ton and I won't have to report?

i would advise against taking the class at a CC and then taking it again because yes they will see that you took the class twice and that certainly doesnt look good. If you want to get a head start then definately find out which book is used in the class at ur college, buy it (as you will have to eventually anyway) and read the chapters to famiarize yourself with the material before its taught.

This is just a general point but: being premed and then going into the health profession later requires a degree of confidence that you seem to be lacking. Why do you think you'll do badly in OChem? Is it just because of that other thread? (I've read the whole thing obviously since i wrote alot in it). One thing you will realize in college is that there are some things that are overhyped and Orgo is one of them. I am by no means saying that it is an easy class but it isnt impossible. Despite the fact that its hard you should have the confidence and work ethic to get through it and do relatively well without making a ridiculously large effort. If you have to go that far out of your way to get through the class then I think you should reconsider such a demanding career. Also you do realize that you have to take general Chem before you take orgo....so you should wait to see how you do in that first though the material is definately easier. In general it sounds like you are planning on or looking forward to failing....not good...you need to show that you believe in yourself before you can get med schools to believe in you.

haha ya i can see how you might see that in me, however i really don't feel thats the case. And yes, i'm starting this thready mainly from reading a lot of that other thread. I honestly feel like i'll do fine in the class, however seeing as theres a good chance(if stuff i've applied for doesn't work out) that i'll have the whole summer ahead of me to do whatever I like and i think beefing up in some important areas of study would be a good way to spend it

Although I think Ochem is going to end up fine either way, I've definitely sorta fallen into the hype that its ridiculous, and i'm someone who just really doesn't want to take chances when it comes to something that is VERY important to me

seeing as med schools we see I took the class twice i'm not going to take this route. I have another friend thats pretty hellbound on medschool as well, so maybe we'll pick up the book and work on it together over the summer, thanks for the input everyone!

I've already taken an advanced chemistry class(not AP, but close) so i guess i'll brush up on that first

But are there any books/text other than the typical text books that yall might suggest? something that might take more of a self-learning approach?

Go volunteer at a hospital or do something useful that isnt academic or just chill out, its the summer before college!
