Ok, So I need to get an inexpensive computer for the first year of college, because my school has a mandatory laptop program for various majors. This starts sophomore year, so I can't buy my full-service comp until I know what I want to major in. However, I don't think that I could survive without a personal computer. What computers would be best for my needs? I want a comp that can hold my music files (I have around 3500 songs), do basic tasks (word, etc.), and also have room for The Sims 2 game. I really don't know anything about computer specs... is there a base amount of memory I would need to hold all my music?

cheapest dell/gateway/hp you can find

apparently you want like an nVidea??? card (it's the video card). I know NOTHING about computers, but my friend's laptop (sony vaio) freezes up on sims 2 and our other friend says it's because her video card isn't good enough

if you're near a best buy, ask the Geek Squad. They're generally helpful and I don't think they would charge for advice. maybe even on www.bestbuy.com?

Asking the Geek Squad is pointless. Their knowledge is very very limited. Go to sites like www.notebookreview.com and post on their forums. People there are much more knowledgeable about computers.

ok, thanks.

seconds the recommendation of notebookreview.com

It's like CC for notebooks. Heh. And notebook buying is a lot less subjective than picking your college.

Basic stuff that one should know:
Processor - Core Duo comes highly recommended, excellent battery life + performance for the price, should last a while.

RAM - 512 MB will get killed a year from now, strongly suggest upgrading to 1 GB.

GFX card - Look at notebookreview, but Sims 2 isn't that intense. Just try not to get an Intel card, if possible, most ATI or NVIDIA cards should work.

I work at Circuit city and we have a decent Toshiba laptop on sale for like $300. not sure if its national./

While I dont work for greek squad, I do work as a PC tech at CC, and if you dont consider me and my colleages ar work smart then well your crazy.
