Another Critical Reading Thread ;)

Ok, so if anybody has improved their CR score from ~650 to above ~720, how did you do it?

What/how did you study to prepare for the time you improved your Critical Reading score?

Thanks.

I just did practice tests, I guess... get used to the questions. Learn some vocab. Just put into practice the things books teach -- avoid extremes, watch out for phrases that may have been in the passage but aren't relevant to question. Most important thing-- make sure that you are interested (or pretending to be interested) in what's going on.

i read passage first and then questions.

for 2 passage part, i read first passage, went through and eliminated ones that didn't make sense in the qeustions, and then kind of simultaneously looked at the qeustions and read 2nd passage.

I took a kaplan prep course during the summer which I think sort of helped

I think the important thing is, you have to figure out what methods work for you. I usually read the passage and try to understand the overall meaning. I always underline things and then I try to have an idea of the answer before i look at the answer choices. Then when i look at the answer choices, I mentally know which ones are wrong.

I think you should just practice more, especially under time restraints too because sometimes you can't underline and write down everything when you only have 25 minutes for each section. GL!

^^ and ^ how much did you improve?

600 or 620, dont remember(prac test) --> 800 (jan)

:)

That's what you were looking for, eh?

i'll be happy with a 730, but yeah 800 would be great

The best way is long-term reading. It's just a good habit to have--read the newspaper. Read a few articles from the New York Times everyday. This will help you with reading skills and will give you a better understanding of the world today. And it'll boost your vocabulary. You can't really go wrong with this.

So, read a lot. You have to try not to think of "okay, how many points did other people increase their scores," because different people improve using different methods. What works for you might not work for other people.

Make sure you have a solid reason for picking your answers to critical reading questions. Often I've found that I picked or eliminated answers based on what "felt" right. The answers are in the passages, but you've got to look and understand what you're reading. Reading the newspaper and magazines like The New Yorker and National Geographic and Time will help.

I went up from the mid 600s to 740. I've been getting around four wrong now when I do practices.
I think Barrons 2400 helps and RR. Definitely look at those.

I agree with dchow08 though, you do have to practice. Don't worry, I'm sure gradually your score will improve.

thanks crispsoph. I wanted somebody to confirm RR for critical reading.
