Another CSU>CC>UC thread. Just one specific question for you inspirations that have done it.

To people who have done this successfully, what was your CSU GPA and how many units transferred over? I am almost done with my first year at a CSU, 4.0 GPA, and I want to leave to a CC for this summer, fall and spring and hopefully transfer to a UC after. The only thing I am worried about is the credit transferability.

I am meeting with a CC advisor in a few days, but I just wanted to get a sense from people who have actually done this. (All but 1 of my 9 courses count for GE credit, if it means anything).

Unrealistic school is obviously Cal, Dream school is UCLA, Satisfactory school is UCSD, Realistic schools are UCI/UCR.

Also, if it means anything, I am going in as a Math/Statistics major.

Thanks guys.

It’s easy. You can make it to berkeley. Just don’t have many upper division courses at the CSU (they add them up differently) and you’re home free.

You probably don’t have UD if you’re a freshman.

@lindyk8‌

Don’t do upper div courses at my CSU? Or at CC? I’m aware that CCs don’t offer upper div. courses, but with math it gets a little sticky as some courses like Linear Algebra, Differential Equations and possibly a Discrete Math course may be seen as upper division. I’m sure this isn’t what you mean, but I thought I 'd ask anyway.

Also, are you a fellow CSU>CC>UC-er? Any advice? I will have 30 units done at my CSU, but will probably need ~40 from my CC to fulfill the various pre-reqs from the UCs (UCSD has the most, while UCLA only wants Calc 1-3, Linear, DifEq, and a stats course)

I am planning on something like 11-13 units in summer, 18 in each fall and spring. What was your experience, if applicable  Thanks.

CCCs don’t have UD but CSUs do. You can take as many LD as you want (including at CSU). The UCs will just let you transfer 70 semester units- the rest you will receive subject credit only.

However they will add UD on top of that 70 LD (or whatever lower total you have of LD). The UCs have unit limits. Anywhere from 80-89 units, depending on campus. So, you can only have 10-19 more UD units if your LD is 70.

UCD is 80 max, as I recall, as is another.
UCLA is 86.5, and I think UCB is 89-90.

I’m not a CSU-UC transfer. Just a friendly face.

Transfer max by campus:

I haven’t taken any UD at my CSU, so it looks like I’m good. Thanks for that clarification. I just hope the fact that I will have attended a CSU, and 2 CCs won’t look like a mess during application. I will probably have to attend two CCs that are pretty equidistant from me simply because of summer unit limits. Both CCs have a unit cap at 10 for the summer semester. Gotta do more than that  Hopefully the UCs admissions see dedication…wishful thinking lol.

No, it won’t hurt you AT ALL. You’ve made an excellent choice. You will be seen as a CCC transfer and have priority. You can definitely get into Berkeley. I’m not saying this lightly. Go look at the berkeley fall 2015 transfer thread.

I added that link above as an edit. If you didn’t see it, go up two posts and look at it.

Thanks so much for all the help. I love looking at the amazing charts UCLA posts about their transfer admission! I found that over the last 10 years, 6 people have transferred directly from my CSU to UCLA, so I guess there is something to be said about the credit agreements?

Also, just for clarification, that link is only applicable if you have upper division work done, correct? I have not taken any courses at my CSU that classify as upper division, so I’m assuming I can take as many CC units as I want, and the UC shall pick 70 of them?

You get subject credit for all classes, and all classes count toward your GPA. They just award you 70 units toward the progress of your degree.

Yes, just UDivision. If you don’t have any, it’s irrelevant. Take as many classes as you need at the CCC.

OK, thanks guys, you rock. Looks like I’ll be busting my ass for the next 10 months. Aiming for that 4.0!

For all the UC’s you can take as many classes you want at a CC but only 70 units will transfer, your GPA for all classes will be counted. There are a few classes that may not transfer. Out of my 65 units at CSU 62 transferred. I used ASSIST to determine if my CSU class was equivelant to a CC class that fulfilled a UC requirement. I appealed and won when they disallowed one of my classes that was equivalent to CC class that fulfilled that requirement. Bio/Psych major with 3.75GPA Transferred to UC Davis. Be careful taking upper division classes because each UC has a different maximum allowed UC Davis was only 10 the lowest. The most allowed was 20 units

Okay, thanks, that makes sense. Yeah I will not be taking any upper division at my CSU as I will be leaving to a CC for the summer, fall and spring. Just as a matter of interest, what CSU did you transfer from? And also, with a 3.75, that seems good enough for UCSD or UCI right? Where else did you apply and get into? Just to get a sense, thanks.

If you are going to be going to a CC, make sure to look into TAG

Sadly you can’t TAG into SD, LA or Berkeley, so I guess the next best school for math majors would be Davis.

Also, I just came up on another issue. Applications are typically due end of November…By then I will have completed 30 units at my CSU, and then this coming summer (Presumably 10-13 units)…but I will have the Fall semester at my CC in progress, and the Spring will not even have been started at all yet…will I not be viewed as a CC applicant? Does this mean I should wait to apply for the Fall of 2016? Shoot…

To be a CC applicant you need 30 units. You also need 30 units completed to TAG

30 units completed by the time of application, or 30 units completed by the time of enrolling in the UC?

30 at time of application

So I can’t have any of those 30 in progress at the time of application? They must be completed?

For TAG yes, for the regular app, I’m not sure.

I guess an advisor should help me out there.
