I'm really keen on going to Michigan for uni as I think I would really enjoy it over there! My application is pretty decent in all aspects except for class rank. That's because I go to an extremely competitive high school in Australia. To give you some idea i'm around the 40th percentile at my school, working hard, and my SAT score is 2200+. Similarly, a friend who did the SATs got 2300 and was not in the top 20%. Very few do the SAT so it's hard to give you an average as such but that should give some idea.

I was wondering how much that would impact my application as I have strong, SATs (I and II), good ECs that show committment as well as doing the hardest possible courses offered with good recs that show my interest in class discussions. Also, our system here works so that your year 12 results are basically compared against the rest of the state and they do some very complex stuff to give you a percentile rank against the state. This is done very well so that all subjects and all schools are directly comparable. My percentile rank will most likely be around 97-98% which is pretty good.

Thanks for reading all that, any advice would be awesome!

I had a much lower SAT then you and was outside of the top 15% in a not-too-competitive public HS and made it in. I’m not sure how much more difficult applying as an international student makes it to get into Michigan, but that may have an affect too.

There is no real answer to your question. Just apply and make the rest of your application as strong as possible - No reason to fret about one statistic. That being said - I’d say you’re a target candidate.

U-M does not evaluate every high school the same and will go deeper into class rank at some high schools versus others. Is there any history of students from your school going to U-M? Obviously they will know less about a school overseas than they know about schools in the Detroit area.

Your actual unweighted GPA will be more important than your rank; along with the strength of your classes (which you already mention is very high).

Well, we don’t have a GPA just marks which aren’t that great since the exams are hard because the school is competitive and doesnt want everyone getting 90%+ on a normal exam.
