Another essay thread.

Hello, for my Rice essay, I want to talk about how me and my friends have made our own fun living in a very boring area. However, the only things I can think of to talk about are sketchy or dangerous things. eg: injuries playing tackle football without pads, riding wagons down hills into trashcans, hosting huge poker cash games. Do you think they would mind if I wrote about something illegal, like gambling, that everyone does. Just phrasing it that way, it seems like the answer is an obvious no, but heck, I think my poker stories are funny and interesting.

it would be somewhat brave depending on your writing.. i personally did the same sort of things, as did plenty of people who got in. i skateboarded, geocached, made jackass-esque videos, etc but never talked about that kind of thing formally and i don't know anyone who was brave enough either. i'm sure i could have written a much better, real, and entertaining essay if i didn't have the feeling that they wanted something more mature and "diverse."

i would do it if you feel that those things REALLY define who you are, to the extent that if you get rejected and somehow know it was your essay that did it, you can confidently say to yourself "that is who i am, and i don't want to go to a place that didn't accept that." this essay did get someone into law school, and the bar is higher there on the maturity level.

I'd see no problem with the football or wagon-riding activities, but I'd be a bit nervous talking about something that's obviously illegal.

gambling isn't one of those illegal things that is truly socially unacceptable, though. heck, a lot of people don't even know it's illegal!
I think it sounds pretty funny. Based on the alum interview I had, they'd probably go for something like that.

Ok- I took a gamble and talked about poker in my essay. Har Har. Does anyone want to read it quick before I send it out tomorrow?
