To start off, sorry for this thread ever existing, as I've been seeing way too many of these lately.

Anyway even though I'm only a Sophomore in Spanish II, I'm starting to wonder about language requirements. This year my school removed Spanish III and has no intention of getting it back.

We do have AP Spanish and French 1 & 2. I am nowhere fluent enough (and dont expect to be by next year) to do well that class considering how much the native speakers are struggling. Since Harvard (and I'm only using Harvard for an example since they have the highest foreign language requirement) "recommends" 4 years, what should I do?

Obviously no college would want me to take Spanish AP as a gringo :D and get a C or D. So should take a year of French (but then it wouldn't be in the same language and I'd prefer not to unless it's beneficial.) or just stop after two years of Spanish?

Btw, the max amount of foreign language that I personally can take is 3 anyway (I need an arts requirement senior year.)

Your school is stupid for getting rid of Spanish III. Even if it’s due to budget issues, I want to whack them in the head with something. Sigh.

I can’t think of anything good. Personally i’d complain to someone who can do something about it, take French in the meantime, or a combination of the two.

This sounds a lot like my post (similar situation). My school canceled my third year of language in favor of personal finance or something and it’s driving me crazy. Thus, I am unable to think of any constructive advice (I’ve tried it all and it doesn’t work). If you want to take French, take French. (It’s cool.)
Good luck!

Your school dropped Spanish 2, there is no Spanish 3, so you stop after 2. Seems pretty simple to me. I doubt any college expects someone to take AP Spanish after only two years of learning the language, and taking one year of French and then stopping that so you can take art senior year is pointless as well. You’ll be fine; it’s your school’s fault, not yours.

Oh and if you really do want to go to a college like Harvard, then yeah I agree with the poster above, take Spanish 3 at a CC. But if you’re looking at UCs, it’s all good, they understand.
