Another HKU vs HKUST

Hey guys.

I'm a student at an American university studying Electrical and Computer Engineering, and I'm pretty dead set on studying abroad my next year for a semester. I'm having trouble deciding on whether to study at HKU or HKUST.

Apparently engineering wise HKUST has the upper-hand, but overall HKU has a better reputation. However, that's not really that important to me since they are both great schools..

What's more important is the social life at the school. Since HKUST is a "science and technology" school, does it kind of have that engineering-vibe to it? What's the male:female ratio (I'm hoping its not too unbalanced is it?) I also saw that HKUST has a beautiful campus/ right next to the beach, with HKU more in the heart of Hong Kong. Any opinions on the two's differing social life?

Thanks, and sorry for yet another HKU vs HKUST thread.

Hi, I’m in my junior year right now and I live in Hong Kong.
HKU is situated much nearer to the central part of the city and therefore is much closer to the clubbing scenes like Lan Kwai Fong, Wanchai (HK Island side) and Mongkok/Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon side).
HKUST is in the New Territories of HK, which is a quite a bit further away from the rest of the city, but with our transport system, it probably doesn’t take more than an hour to get to Kowloon/HK Island (I don’t know since I’ve never been to UST but it’s just an estimation).
I’m not sure what kind of ‘vibe’ HKUST has but the male:female ratio is very much male>female, don’t know about the numbers.
This is completely irrelevant to your questions, but may be noteworthy - according to my teachers who visited HKUST for some lectures last year, they have really good cafeteria food.

^correction. HKUST has the best cafeteria food in all of Hong Kong. aahahahah.

@OP. it depends on what you want. HKU is more of that “Comprehensive” school whereas UST as you mentioned is focused in Engineering & Business.

If youre expecting an american-college like party scene in Hong Kong, that does not exist. We’re still conservative in that matter, but the internationals from both HKU andHKUST go to the bar district downtown quite often. HKU though runs very much like the british house system, in which each dorm has its unique culture and stuff. Its quite tough for local students as they are required to represent their dorms (called halls here) in inter-hall competitions and other commitments. With that aside, HKU and UST is more academically oriented instead of social life focused.

Hey, I would be in HKU this coming Sept and I would like to know if it’s possible to transfer to Ivy Leagues? (of course I would have to work my butt off but i want to know if it’s possible) thanks.

HK is a very small place actually,
They are not that different, just follow your heart.
