Another I want to get into MIT

I am currently in the 8th grade, which is a fairly early year to begin preparing for college. But I've always had my heart set on MIT since I was in 6th grade. Being around other people like me in that school would be great. I'm 13 so I have a while 'till I plan on attending.

Some of the things which would be factors. I take all honors classes (AP's are not available in 8th grade, I do plan on taking AP's though, all AP's through high school) I cannot take AP/Honors science until I am in 10th grade in our school district. (How will this affect my plans) I enjoy doing things involving Logical thinking, and formulas. (Ex: Algebra, solving Rubik's cubes) Will hobbies such as solving Rubik's cubes affect my chances of entering MIT? I plan on taking a science career path. Will this increase my chances of getting a scholarship. I come from a lower-middle class (Slightly poor) family, I already know this can get me scholarships as it has already gotten me one. My family is a minority (Russian immigrants) I have A's, and A-'s. And I plan to increase them all to A's as I have been slowly doing. I am involved in several activities such as honor's society, and several church activities. One of which I am very involved in, volunteer in, and quite often place first in. Will any of these activities help me get into MIT? And what should I add to this that gives me a higher chance? I know that MIT has a HUGE pool of applicants, with skills equal to, and very likely exceeding my own, and I have had my heart set on this school for a while. I am fairly behind in my math courses. (I cannot take pre-calculus courses in 10th grade which I planned to do) I hope to take classes online to make up for this.

If anyone has any suggestions I'll really be thankful. I've had my heart set on this school since 6th grade, once again. It's all right if the suggestions require me to spend more of my free time. I'll make the sacrifice. I also realize I have to get my grades up, this is not a major concern.

Anyone help would be greatly appreciated.

"Will hobbies such as solving Rubik’s cubes affect my chances of entering MIT? "

-Wow, that is so cute.

I have an idea…learn to have a childhood before planning to go to college ok? If it’s all you think about, you’re going to end up with a pretty dismal and solitary social life.

Sorry? I asked for suggestions. I’m not very serious into getting to college now, but I came with a reasonable question and get bashed for it? 9th grade is the normal time to prepare for colleges like this and I’m nearing that trying to get ready. I honestly hope someone will actually give me some useful advice for my future, instead of give me a suggestion that I didn’t ask for. 9th grade is the year that I’m planning to begin getting ready, and a normal question isn’t allowed? About the Rubik’s cube comment I mainly asked will having hobbies help. I thought most people here would give kind advice, instead of bash me for trying to get ready early for the rest of my life.

Haha pretty feisty one eh?

Well, you should try and get as good grades early on, and find some activity that you excel in and pursue it, be it a sport, math team, science, etc.

If you truly want to go to MIT, you are better off showing activites that are strong in the science and math fields. Honor society and church activities will not cut it, but don’t force your e.c.'s upon yourself. Do what you love to do as it will eventually come to show ur personality.

Don’t worry too much, however, as freshman year is a time of getting accustomed to high school and starting your favorite hobbies. Don’t be scared to try out several activites, try out for sports, etc.! It’s all building a foundation.

Most importantly, like greenemeralds said, HAVE FUN! Make friends, live life, as these social skills will help you not only get into college but afterwards in the ‘real life’ as well.

“I’m not very serious into getting to college now…”

You’re on a college discussion forum.
You’re in 8th grade.
You’ve had your heart set on MIT since 6th grade.
You’re basically asking us what you can do to boost your chances of getting into MIT.

You’re a liar.

either folks are way too mean or i have trouble spotting ■■■■■■

I think there is no need to be harsh here at all… it’s a kid trying to set the right path for high school from the start.

Better than looking back in one’s junior year and saying “man i screwed up,” isn’t it?

that’s what i felt when i posted a thread from my (at the time) discouraged 8th grader. i read so many posts from students who wished they had taken their studies a bit more seriously but of course i was slammed by many who felt you should not take grades seriously at all til jr year and if you do so any earlier you are crazy etc etc. so i think it is commendable for this young person to wonder what he can do to maximize his chnaces tog et into a college he wants

shoot for the stars…if you don’t make it ,you will still be better off than never trying at all

It’s never too early! Good job.
Do what you love; show what you’re good at through stellar competition awards and deep extracurricular commitments. When you’re in high school, try to find an internship.
Rubiks cube? Well, win some competitions and it’ll be more interesting.
Honestly though, you need to work in some more diversity to make you stand out from the other applicants who will sound JUST LIKE YOU.
Get into athletics; believe it or not, MIT is pretty into sports, especially swimming. If you’re good at swimming, you’ll be really cut out for MIT.
I would visit if you haven’t yet and check their info meetings and tour, you’ll get a better sense of what you need to do.
Good luck!

it may also help y ou to look at the stats page here on cc and see what other kids have donw and whether they were accepted or not.also mit’s acceptance profiles on their web site are really helpful too

^^^^^ agreed

Have fun. You honestly don’t need to be worrying about this right now. Look around in 9th grade and try to join as many clubs as you can. Find 2 or 3 things you really enjoy and stick with them.

Good luck / come back in 2-3 years?

Thanks for all the good advice, and as for the response to the first person. I tend to get on the defensive when I get treated like a child. Age doesn’t affect mental maturity at all, and it really ticks me off when people do stuff like that. I’d much rather be ready for college 2 years before graduating, rather than starting to get ready as a Senior. As for the Ec’s I’ll join up a couple of the Ec’s at my school I’ve been meaning to join. Thanks again all the people who gave advice.
