Another in need of chancing..thanks in advance!

Hi everyone,

This summer I visited Vassar and fell absolutely in love. It's my top choice and I really can't see myself anywhere but there. I can't stop thinking about it..Like I said, I fell hard.

Anyway, I know it's extremely tough to get into but I was wondering what you think my chances are. I would apply early decision, but I can't for financial reasons.

Anyway:
I have dual citizenship and speak fluent Greek (mother greek, father american).
I am in the top 13% of my class with a 3.96 weighted gpa, class rank of 26 out of 190 at a public school.
Last year I took AP US History and scored a 5, and AP Psychology and got a 4.
I got a 730 on my History SAT II and I am about to take the literature SAT II.
I got a 690 Critical Reading, 690 Writing, but a 530 in math :( I'm taking it again and hopefully will do better!
This year I'm taking AP Environmental Science, AP English, and AP French, as well as Statistics, Honors Global Studies, and Senior Seminar.

Club-wise:
National Honor Society
President of Environmental Club 11-12 (member 10-12)
Photography Editor of Yearbook 12 (member 11-12)
In Drama Club (Thespian Troupe 1154) 9-12, several lead roles in dramas.
Chorus 9-12
Chronicle (school newspaper) 10-11

Volunteered twice a week at a local elementary school and tutored students.

Worked for a little over a year at a food store (10-11) and now work at a veterinary hospital as an aide.

I'm in love love love with Vassar but I'm worried I won't get in and I'll be let down. Please let me know if I have a realistic chance. Thanks so much and sorry for another one of "these" posts.

Can someone just answer me? Are my chances really that bad??

hi, mairoula517,
sorry can't help u there coz i'm applying this fall too .
I found u mantion "I would apply early decision, but I can't for financial reasons." why is tht?

Hi Nishan..

Generally, people who apply early decision don't get as much financial aid as people who do not. I'm sure there are ways out, but when college tuition is almost as much as your family makes a year, I don't want to take that chance!

Hope that answers your question. And PLEASE someone answer me...Even if it's bad news, I would prefer to know so as to keep myself grounded. Thanks.

Mairoula, have you looked at the Vassar stats profile page? You'll see that many students with considerably higher scores than yours were rejected last year. There's no reason you shouldn't apply, but you should consider Vassar a big reach and be sure to have some matches and safeties on your list as well.

Thanks skie :) I am aware of that, and I feel like that's really the only weak spot on my application. I've got a good essay and stellar recs, so hopefully that will count for something. And I'm taking the SATs again come November, so I'm hoping that I'll do better. This time i'm actually getting tutored.

OK so change of plans. I'm applying ED 1 and I expect my SAT scores to go up significantly (100-200 points). I also think I did really well on the lit SAT II.

Oh, and I forgot to mention in my original post that I also volunteer for Friends of the Wissahickon, an environmental organization.

..New chances?

I think you should try but be sure to have a backup plan in case Vassar doesn't work out. They do say that they expect at least a 3.7 unweighted, which you may have. Unfortunately it is tougher for girls at Vassar, like most other top schools, than it is for boys so it will be a bit of a reach for you. Perhaps your speaking Greek may prove to be something that attracts them.

Good Luck!
