I didn’t want to hijack another thread, so I created a new one.
I am planning to get one new cabinet for above our fridge and have it installed (It doesn’t match our close to 20 YO cabinets exactly, but it is hopefully close enough, and since it will be only 12 inches and above the fridge we are hoping int won’t be noticed by many).
Then we are planning to have all of the cabinets painted (BM Dove White).
However, when I was ordering the new cabinet, I starting talking to the guy placing the order, and he said I should consider replacing the doors and drawer fronts instead of having them painted. They are Kitchen Aid cabinets.
He said the price won’t be that much different, and it will look much better than if we just paint them.
Has anyone done this, and/or done the comparison between painting and replacing the fronts?
Results, if so?
We are signing a contract to reface our cabinets today. We know two families that had their cabinets professionally painted and it just didn’t hold up over time.
@1214mom do you have your bid on the cabinet painting??? I wonder if your bid is high - and that’s why someone else says it would be similar to reface.
We costed out replacing doors and drawer fronts. It was expensive. We have 46 drawers or doors. Ours will be painted…but they don’t need to be stripped!
I’m quite sure my ugly wood will look a lot worse than my painted ones will look.
Like I said, we crunched the numbers. We also don’t plan to live in this house forever which also factors into how much we will spend. Heck, if this was my forever home, I would redo the whole kitchen.
We refaced our ugly cabinets a few years after moving into our house. It cost far less than replacement, and there is no way we would have wanted to paint our 1970 builders quality cabinets. We were very happy with them for many years (we have lived in our house for 36 years). We did a renovation 8.5 years ago, and we did replace cabinets because we reworked the layout. But I definitely would recommend refacing if it’s just a cosmetic upgrade.
Your wood refaced and new door cabinets look better than the painted ones.
What I’m saying is my soon to be painted ones will look far better than the wood.
@kelsmom mine are good quality cabinets…we just don’t want to spend all that much to get them refaced now. Painting will do the trick. If we are still living here in five years….we might reconsider and reface then. In the meantime…this painting will surely be an improvement
My in-laws re-faced several years ago. Completely changed the look of their kitchen and was a relativelyquick and affordable project… They sold the home a couple years later.
Just to mention that Home Depot says the average cost to resurface cabinets in a kitchen is approximately $15,000 and gives some variations. I guess I can’t post the page here, but google a search like “refacing kitchen cabinets cost”. While I see tons of estimated costs, all of them seem too high for us.
I think we’re going to paint our cabinets. I have a professional-grade paint/stain sprayer. I would mask the heck out of the kitchen myself along with sanding and filling in holes and dents. I might then get our handypersons to remove/reinstall the doors and do the primering/painting of them in our backyard. I would think this would be much cheaper than resurfacing. And certainly a lot more hassle!
We had a rep from Home Depot come out. Horrible experience.
Just to give you real numbers for refacing, we are doing maple wood doors and drawers. 21 doors and 5 drawers ( dovetail soft close) all trim , toe kicks. We had a big side panel added in one place $15660.
The company doing ours also does renovations so we are doing a lot more.
We are doing a number of different upgrades to our home, so I have to be frugal with the pennies so we can accomplish all that we need to do.
I do very little electrical or plumbing work, but I am reasonably ok with other kinds of things. Professional painters here, as with almost everything, are very expensive, so Santa thankfully gifted us with the professional paint sprayer. I’ve checked out some YouTube videos on how to paint cabinets. With one or two helpers and the spray painter, I think this is one project I want to do myself to save those precious pennies. One of my handypersons flips homes, so, if I am actually able to get him, he’s got a great eye for detail.
Our boxes and doors are in good shape, so I don’t see any need to replace the cabinets. I will look into re-facers and get a couple of estimates to be sure I want to do this myself.
Thanks for your quotes, as that gives me some idea. Our’s is a smaller kitchen, so we don’t have as many doors. And, subject to my wife’s veto power, I would go with some light color and then change the knobs and hinges to give the kitchen a more up-to-date look. I don’t think it’s very complicated for us to tackle this ourselves, but it will be a bit of a hassle.
