Another laptop question...

Dell or HP? I would really like if people just stuck to answering the question with these two brands. I am not getting a Mac so please don't suggest it. And it's nothing personal against mac, I just am more familiar with Windows and that's what I'm getting. Thanks!

Dell laptops are fine. They work and they are inexpensive, but they look a little cheap IMO. Dell haven't updated the design in a while, so you might want to wait a bit (I'd assume they'd release them within the next few months, I could be wrong though).

HP makes decent laptops, which aren't too expensive. Like Dell, they aren't the greatest, but they will get the job done.

For anyone that wants a decent laptop, neither are bad options. Someone might tell you that "Dells suck", or "HPs suck" but they have improved in recent years.

They are both really similar. If you want something that looks cool go with the newer dell E1505 or E1705 (they loook decent) or a low end Alienware computer (owned by dell now, www.alienware.com). If your looking for the best deal select ether one, you will be happy with ether option. Id check deal sites like www.gotapex.com and www.slickdeals.net for coupons and deals on laptops.

Gotapex has these coupons for Dell Home laptops (Insprion only, Expire 4/13/06 5:59 am cst or after 4000 Redemptions, these are located on dells site under the "UP TO $750 OFF SELECT NOTEBOOKS" Section under Special offers)

put my vote for Dell. great deals and cheap but awesome laptops. my dad has a dell and is still up and running after 5 years.

Choose Dell, never liked HP desktops, though their Printers are cool

I like Dell's service. I have a Dell with the 4 yr warranty + CompleteCare. A few weeks ago, I was at home on spring break when one of the keys popped out of my laptop. I called Dell and they sent a guy over to my house the next day and he replaced the entire keyboard in just a minute! The phone support is in India...but so is HP's, so just get used to the accent.

Many campuses also have authorized Dell service centers where you can get your laptop fixed under warranty.

Yeah, if I had to buy a new PC today, it would be hands down Dell.

Oh, and I should add that I have compared my Dell Inspiron 6000 with a friends HP dv1000, and the HP's LCD seemed awfully flimsy. I wouldn't put anything on top of that.

I have an HP and love it. My dad has had HP's and Compaqs for years, and has been very very happy with them
Most of the kids on my floor have Dells. Most of them have had problems with their Dells. Not only have they had problems with their Dells but they've had even bigger problems with Dell customer service.

get a Dell latitude. ive been looking at laptops myself and if i dont get a mac ill get a dell.

Dell XPS = greatness

I say stay away from dell. Look into Toshiba's. They're about the same price as dell's but are built tougher and have better customer support if a problem arises.

OP said HP or Dell only, don't confuse her.

lol. thanks redski. I went on Toshiba's website and big surprise I was lost. But thanks for all the replies! If anyone has any other suggestions I'd love to hear them!

Hp all the way.

yeah redski i know.. but if dell and hp were my options i'd choose to not have a laptop :) so i was throwing out other options.

HP DV1000T very realiable. Good warranty. And sturdy.

Had an HP...hated it...
Have a Toshiba...hate it (admittedly, it's from a bad line of theirs)
Had a Dell...loved it
Had an IBM (pre-Lenovo days)...loved it

In the end? Screw it. Going with a MacBook in Sept...

The only good makes are IBM/Lenovo, Toshiba, and Apple. Dells are trash, they are unreliable. HP and Compaq are only marginally better. The worse, however, is Acer. I know someone who got an Acer that broke after two months and was in the shop for another month.

I have two iBooks. One is six years old and still works great, other than the fact it needs a new battery after all of these years (they will wear out naturally, just like any rechargable). The new one has been excellent as well. My only other laptop is a 19 year old Toshiba T1200. Still runs great.

Not quite. The older style Dell Inspirons, such as the 600m and the old gray models like it, were certainly not manufactured to such high standards. But the new silver/white Inspirons are of very good quality. I migrated from an Inspiron 1100 to a 6000, and I definitely noticed greatly improved quality. Also, don't forget that Dell Latitudes are comparable to Lenovo ThinkPads. They compete head on and are meant to be semi-rugged and durable.

Lol, don't make me laught, you're only 1/3 right. I wouldn't say IBM/Lenovo and Toshiba are great laptops. And Dell is awesome. I have their desktop and it runs perfectly, their laptops are cool too, though I'll buy one from Sony (I like their style)

I think it's interesting how people all have their prejudices against this brand or that brand.

So many people on this thread keep saying how great Toshibas are, yet both of mine have been nightmares.
