I’m sure this question is a bit tiring for the Michigan community but I have to ask it… I would love to go to Michigan. From your experience, what do you think are my chances of getting into the Ross School of Business. Any way I can make my application stronger?
Illinois Resident: (parents are more than happy to pay Michigan OOS tuition)
High School: Competitive Private
GPA: 3.5
ACT: 32
All my junior and senior core classes were AP. Exhausted my school’s math curriculum so I’m currently taking math at the University of Chicago: Math Circles of Chicago.
I played varsity soccer for 4 years
*My mom is a Michigan grad and donor… Not sure if that helps.
Your ACT is right at the admission average, but your GPA is quite out of the range unless you are recruited athlete. How is your class rank? Does your school give low grades?
Hi Billcsho
Thank you for your reply. My class rank as of last quarter was 43 of 791. My school has a policy on grade inflation, so I assume it is strict when it comes to grades? Do you have any ideas on how to make my application stronger? I kid you not, my dream is to go to Michigan. While I will settle for UIUC and most likely end up at IU, I would give up my left arm for the chance to go to Michigan. Even though I was born and raised in Chicago, I always wanted to go to Michigan. My mom graduated from there but that was in the 1980s…
I also applied early action and I would kill to have your ACT score. I guess I am the real Michigan dreamer.
At AcceptableName: Are you in-state or out of state?
You are probably fine ; if you are at a competitive Chicago area private school the Michigan adcom will give you a GPA boost. If you are at one of the really big name ones (e.g. UC Lab School, Latin School, etc.) , you’ll get a very large boost and the adcom will know your GPA distribution too. My son’s in-state private school had 100% EA acceptance last year with GPA floor around 3.0 @ ACT 32, but standards are lower for in-state. You should check Naviance to see what your schools experience looks like ; that is the best predictor of admission.
GPA and ACT are low for Ross pre-admit, so don’t hold your breath on that. They only pre-admit 15% of students. Part of that will depend on you essays and experience. You also might have issues with CoE if you applied there unless your math subscore is exceptionally high.
Legacy status is going to help some too.
@TooOld4School
I do go to UC Lab… I already applied to UMich, so I hope I get in. I know being OOS makes it much tougher. UIUC or Michigan are my top two. Thank you for your reply!
