another notebook thread

what would you consider as the BEST notebook for college - assuming price ISN'T an issue...?

if i had the money to spend, which i don't, i would buy five star brand notebooks.

But since i dont, the regular cheap mead notebooks are enough.

If you're talking abot laptops i would recommend a 15" powerbook.

PLEASE, will you just search this forum and check out the other threads that ask the same question as yours!?!?!? Honestly, this has been discussed too many times already!

To really answer your question, only cuz I don't want to be too rude/mean :o, I think the general consensus among CC users is:

Best PC (Windows XP based)
-Thinkpad T series
-Dell Inspiron 6000
-Dell Inspiron 700m
-Dell Latitude D610

Best Mac
15" Powerbook, like hnbui said.

a brand that no one has really heard of is asus. they've been making motherboards for years, and have finally branched into the notebook area. check out the asus section on notebookforums.com. based on feedback, it seems that their z70v/z71v notebooks are awesome. i just bought a z70v myself from istnc.com (great service, really nice people). but yeah, there are tons of threads--all you have to do is search

well, the best laptop/ notebook is probably a customized Sting 715 by Widow PC. Truly awesome specks, not too big, etc. Widow PC is a great company.

HP tc4200 and other top notch tablet pc / notebooks are awesome :D

Dell inspiron 600m

i like the 700m but i think its design is ugly. Do u guys know any other small laptops that costs below $1000? whenever i serach for laptops, only the big ones come up. So what's the best way to look for small ones?

thanks, sorry for opening the thread. :-)

http://www.notebookreview.com/ has a good search engine for notebooks :) Good place to start looking for a small one, I would think.

are the sony viaos and toshibas any good?

I wouldn't recommend sony vaios...I got one and had to return it because it just stopped working (wouldn't start up). They're kind of hit-or-miss so you're taking a pretty big risk when you buy one. They also tend to get really hot and are on the expensive end. I would recommend an IBM thinkpad T series.

Ravindra, this should be enough to convince you not to get a Sony:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=69514

As for Toshiba, they're so and so. They're better than Sony and perhaps HP, that's for sure. But better to go with the ones I listed in my earlier post.

More complaints about sony vaios:

Ok thanks guys. Now I'm having trouble deciding between the HP zd8000 series and the IBM thinkpad t series. The zd 8000 seems really good and cheap considering all the features it has. Any comments or suggestions?

The decision is simply based on your intended uses. If you want a portable laptop that you can take to your classes or maybe the library, then the Thinkpad T series is obviously the choice for you. If you would like a really powerful notebook, plus plan to leave your notebook mostly on your dorm desk, but can still snap it up once in a while, then go with the HP zd8000. Keep in mind that as a 17" notebook, the zd8000 has very little battery power as opposed to the thinkpad T series, so don't expect much portability out of it.

My friend has a zd 8000 and the thing is absolutely enormous. If you want it to be portable, i wouldnt get one, the thing is almost 2 inches thick and weighs almost 9 and a half pounds. if possible i would go for the thinkpad. Though in the end as a mac user i always have to throw in that macs are always a viable choice, especially if you compare them to similarly equiped dell's. www.systemshootouts.org is a good website to debunk a lot of price myths, and macs really are a worthwhile investment.

Check out Asus.

Ok thanks, so dv8000s are out. Just one more question...suppose i were interested in the hp dv1000, the dv4000 (both fully loaded) and the thinkpad t43 with the dv 1000 weighing around 5.5lbs, the dv4000 weighing around 6.75lbs, and the thinkpad weighing arouond 5.5 lbs. Since portability no longer seems to be an issue, and with the dv series coming with lots of features and accessories for a relatively low price (although no microsoft office professional), which would you all recommend? Sorry if I'm getting annoying :)

P.S. Also can thinkpads have both dvd and cd burners...i was a bit confused about that and i really want a dvd burner in my laptop.

Thanks again

Not sure if this will help... but def NOT dell, especially the inspiron series. they look cheap, feel cheap, ARE cheap, and break several times before the warranty ends (which, the day afterwards, would completely die). I wouldnt recommend sony vaios, either.
