another of those chances threads

Hey Guys,

I’ve got a friend who’s really intent on getting into Stanford, but is too shy to come up and post her stat’s here. I think she’s pretty smart, but didn’t exactly do her best when she took the SAT. Well, I’m posting here what she put up somewhere else, for her. What do u think her chances are like? Oh, and she applied SCEA.

This is as she put things:

I am a female Indian student who hopes to study the neurosciences and wants a Biology Major with an Honours track in the Neurosciences.

Where do you think I’ll get in with a 2050 on the SAT I? The break-up was like this:

Math- 620
Reading- 690
Writing- 740
Essay- 11
MC- 71

My Subject Test results will be out in late November, Bio and Math Level I went well. Chem was not so good. I had very little time. I don’t have to send those scores though!

I got a 287 on my TOEFL with a 6 on the essay.

My grades are only OK. I stand fourth in a class of 12. I don’t know my GPA.

I have good letters of recommendation, pretty good essays and my extra curriculars are:

An avid birdwatcher since age seven.

Journalism- Student Editor of School Newsletter & Magazine, responsible for yearbook. Also, I’m a Senior School Prefect.

Basketball, Throwball and Handball. Sports Captain till the tenth standard.

Pottery.

Taught myself to play the piano and can play Strauss and Bach and so on. I play by ear.

Set Design and Props Creator for Theatreworks, I help them create sets and props for their plays and help in the costumes too. Also, I have been part of a group that produced and enacted a play on career choices.

Member and active volunteer of the Society to Save Rocks since the eighth standard.

How do things look? Please reply if you feel I might fit in somewhere.

Well, is she getting in?

It's hard to tell without the GPA. Do you know approximate grades? The SATs are a little low. I don't know if Stanford is counting the writing section (some schools are using it as an SAT II). If not, she might be in trouble. 1310/1600 is not so good, but people with lower scores have gotten in. The essays could make a big difference.

However, her scores are good enough to get into quite a few good schools. If she wants to do neuroscience, she should look at Oberlin. It's in Ohio, isn't much like Stanford, but is a great school and has a neuroscience major. UChicago has a biological sciences major with a concentration in neuroscience. Both schools are very selective, but easier to get into than Stanford.

thanks for replying Ria215.

I think she got A's in most subjects, and even one or two A+'s. That is, of course, by the Indian system of grading.

I'm sure her essays are very good, though.

any others, guys?

for the "lower SATs who's gotten in" I have a feeling they'd mostly be...exceptional-circumstanced people? (recruited athletes/legacy+doner, etc??)

is this a joke? avid birdwatcher? Society to save rocks?

Maybe I'm just stupid...

"society to save rocks"

I was wondering about that too. I guess you'll need to elaborate a bit on the real app.

lol, no offense, but I just laughed my head off on that one.

hahaha that reminds me of the church of the flying spaghetti monster

Haha, the only thing cooler than FSM is the invisible pink unicorn.

yeah i found the rock society great. lol

hey tell your friend that there is no need to be shy from here. its pretty anonymous here. its great to come here for support/help/advice. i would reccomend to anyone who's looking at colleges to join this forum.

Can I start a sand collection society?

Actually, I've already started the Sand collection society. Back off, bud. That baby's mine.

You can start the Save the Compost Society for healthier soil for us to grow and be nurtured in.

or start a new UFO cult and convince people to wear specially made Nike sneakers and bring chapsticks and be prepared to 'jump' the comets.

Speaking of, THERE WILL BE A METEOR SHOWER ON NOV 17! get ready to make a wish! O.O (I wonder what you'll all wish for...)
